The TC works by using the ABS brake system and is fully automatic . . when a wheel starts to turn faster than the average rotation speed of the remaing wheels the system applies the brake to the faster wheel, which causes the drive to 'transfer' to the other wheels via the differential !!
You will hear strange noises similar when it is operating, akin to a 'spring boinging', or a kind of tangy, rattle !!
This is perfectly normal . . . (well I hope it is, cos my Disco does it)
Also, (in case you didn't know), the TC system is more 'aggresive' or works harder . . . when in Low Range !! So, you may be in 1st gear HR, and not get through the goo as well as you will in LR !!!

Try Hill descent control next ... find a really steep grassy slope, low range, first gear, set the HDC button, and drive over the edge .
Whatever you do, do NOT push the clutch down!
A bit of throttle will help her descend more quickly .... and someone said that the cruise control works in Hill Descent mode, but mine won't do it yet.

the DiscoII traction control is simply superb...the only downside to it, is the the noise it makes. Which is perfectly normal, nothing to worry about and actually quite pleasing once you understand what is going on ...and your car is still ploughing through whatever you are throwing it at ...
You will also find the same noise and sensation when you start her up, if you got your foot hard on the brake pedal. This is also normal as it is the TC computer (SLABS ecu)running through its power on self test.

Cruise control & HDC, not on Discovery 2, that came later.
On Discovery 3, Range Rover Sport, Freelander 2 and Range Rover since it gained Terrain Response, you can adjust the target speed of HDC using the cruise control + & - buttons.
Although not recommended, on Td5 HDC will work, for about 45 secs, if you dip the clutch, or even go into neutral! In other words it will protect you from your own stupidity!
I believe you, but I won't be trying it!
Well, maybe I will on a slope that isn't too steep ....
MORAL on steep descents: NEVER push the clutch pedal!
DO NOT try to change gear on steep slopes, up or down.

No it didn't - Cruise Control AND HDC . . ARE very much on the Disco 2, even the 'early' Disco 2's had HDC as standard.
ALL varients ARE wired for cruise, although the lower spec ones didn't have the switches fitted, VERY easy DIY fit (LR will tell you it is complicated, and will want around £300+ do do it for you) . . .

As Charles said, it's a brave soul who presses the clutch on a steep descent HDC (or not) and anyway, why would you WANT to

I quite agree, but I did say not recommended, but there to protect idiots!
Try it, it helps build confidence in the vehicle, but all this technology is only there to help, basic rules still apply, gong down a steep hill, low range first, feet off everything.
