Hello,
I wonder if anyone can tell me what the problem might be or maybe it's normal. I have series 2 td5 and as I change up through the gears as the engine speed drops for the next gear I get like a rattle, something like when you put a fag packet in your bike wheel when you was a kid. remember? Or maybe like a football rattle (nowhere near as loud though). This noise is intermittent and at the moment the car is running perfectly, no noise and very smooth. But every now and again it comes back. Giving it a good thrashing occasionally sorts it out.

Any ideas?

check the heat sheild around the transfer box rubber mounting that can start to break up and rattle and cause a vibration that sounds like it is something worse.I did have the same noise and that cured it.

Hi Scotty,
Thanks for the info, but just been and checked it and it's perfect. In fact had a good look underneath and it all looks perfect. The car is a late 2002 with lower than average mileage and is in excellent condition throughout.
So still not sure what it could be.

Just another thought check the exhaust manifold to see if any of the studs are loose or missing because they can snap the front 2 studs and the exhaust manifold gasket is a steel sheet and that can cause a vibration noise off load.

Thanks once again for your comments, but no it's not the exhaust manifold, I've checked it and all is as it should be.

Not sure if its the same rattle but I had one a few days ago, only happened when ticking over, as soon as I revved it it went away.

Looked underneath and found that the exhaust was touching the gearbox bell housing ever so slightly, after looking further found that the rubber on the back box had split causing the exhaust to drop. . . . 2 zip ties later and problem solved.

i had a slightly different noise like this ages ago and it was very strange but i had two loose front prop bolts loose but trapped coz the others were tight and believe it or not that was what was making the noise on mine - couldnt believe they were loose!!

Hello all,
Thanks for the replies, unfortunately none of them match my noise. I've checked everything you've all said and it seems to be in order. So not sure what it could be. I'm thinking it may be something to do with the exhaust, maybe a loose baffle or could it be something to do with the turbo. What do you think? Like I said earlier everything is perfect at the moment.
