Hey up all,

I currently run an ex Anglian Water Utility TD5, my business is on site engineering and welding so i carry a 6kva generator in the back permanently as i never know when i will need it.
I was wondering if anyone has retro fitted a genny unit on to a PTO driven off the transfer box?
If not could anyone please point me in the direction of a company that can advise me on the idea.

Cheers

Andy

Im sure its possible mechanically as series models used to use a h/d pto with double v belt pulley leading up into load area to drive a welder, but not sure on the td5 how you would get the engine to maintain constant rpm as the generator takes up a load?
Have a look on ebay for land rover ptos, there normally a few for sale but tbh not many defender units, theres two main sellers of 2nd hand and refurbed ptos and winches etc on ebay, one german guy and one uk guy called Maudie

Can you not fit hand throttle on td5 like the series?

Thanks for the heads up on the power units Mudmut will ring them monday for more info :)

Not on a TD5 I wouldn't think - you've got an electronic accelerator haven't you?

Even on a pre td5 it would be tricky, as the series accelerator that incorporates the hand throttle is quite different.

pre td5s are relatively easy to fit hand throttles and are available , early diesel engines didnt them as pumps were governed to increase with load

There were a couple of different setups with the series , basically dictated by how much power you were trying to use , there was a multi V belt driven direct on pto on gearbox rear ,vertically up thru floor , this was for lighter duty , IIRC 16hp , and even then you needed to keep a good eye on the gearbox mounting rubbers . Then there was a prop driven from rear pto and then vertically and back thru rear of loadbed. This was the heavy duty version IIRC it was a chain drive . On the petrol versions there was a governor system , set by the hand throttle , but dont think it was used on diesels , they just had a hand throttle quadrant .

This is what you need for a TD5

I bought an ex-Electricity 110 that had a PTO winch on the front and a switch on the dash that increased and decreased the idle speed. Unfortunately for me, the winch and bumper were removed before the auction so I'm left with just this and the hydraulics...

It should not be too difficult to fit a hand throttle using a cable that came thru footwell and pulled the accelerator peddle down to set a given rpm . I had to convert a hand throttle from rod to cable operation to work on a leyland diesel I fitted to a 109 many years back HTSH

Just looked on ebay at 6kva gensets and they seem to be all of 15bhp, so may work, but looking at the price of them got to be less hassle just to carry on with what you have?

So...

Am i right that on the TD5 i could install tho pto unit and fabricate something ie v belts up through the floor to run a gen unit and then fit something to the throttle to govern the revs?

I know what you are saying Lynall about staying with what i have but 2 things, the genny unit i have does not put out enough kva to run my welding equipment effectively and also i need to reduce the weight and space within the vehicle due to all the other kit i carry and removing the engine to run the genny will help this.

Do you want to sell the throttle unit?

Lynall - Due to the amount of kit i carry i am limited on space and weight so to get rid of the engine on the Genny would be a brat help. Also the benny i currently use has not got enough output to runn the welding equipment effectively.

MudMut - Good Find :) will ring them and find out more.

BrianP - would you sell the throttle unit?

Sorry, forgot all about this thread! Make me a decent offer plus a few quid for postage and it's yours :)
