I'm looking to sell my 2005 Td5 because it's a finished project and I fancy a change.
I've seen reports saying the Td5 is full of electrics and problems, I've seen a couple of lovely rebuilt 300's, I don't exactly drive fast, but like something smooth and reliable, so.... how much slower is a 300tdi likely to be for general tootling around?
I've also heard that the 300 is not easy to tune or get any more power out of, is that true?
I don't do that many miles, the Defender is great for going fishing, chucking the dogs and kids in etc, and I want something I can give to my son when he's 18 (5 yrs away yet)
Any advice for or against going to a 'classic old' 300tdi that's been loved and cared for?

300Tdi - easy to work on/fix - no electrics to break - easy to tune up - good on the road - decent MPG (for a defender) - loads of bolt on bits - cheap spares - you don't need a code reader to find out whats wrong with it............... just my 2p :)

A rebuild defender 300tdi is a about £6k but is well worth it!!
It's like a "new" one but a lot less.

They tune to around 150bhp safely and thanks to a thread on here with the steps and photos, you can do it yourself.

The 300tdi isn't slow but isn't fast either! But it's a tractor so how fast do you want to poodle round?

They do as much as you need them to and a bit more :)
Best engine in my opinion but I am biased

Fuel pump tweaks : http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f49/bosch-ve-injector-pump-tweaks-212921.html easy DIY without having to CHIP it up!!!
Thanks for the sensible replies. I think a 300 might be up my street because I love working on things myself. Simple as that, but how simple is it to get 140-150 bhp or improve the torque without serious tuning? Also, there are many threads saying the Td5 will give better mpg? Is that true?

I see, no thanks for me then???? you sir are a cad!!!!

Read the tweaking link and it will show you how easy it is to turn up the power - be aware that to do it safely you will need to monitor the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) and thats easy to do - using a probe through the EGR blanking plate on the exhaust manifold - you can also upgrade the intercooler for more BHP :)

No, I only tend to thank decent people. Sorry.
And by the way, a CAD means... an ill-bred man, especially one who behaves in a dishonorable or irresponsible way toward women.... nuff said!!

I have full size intercooler, pump tweaked, straight through S/S exhaust and full size alley rad too to keep it cool.
I had a little play with a tuned TD5 and he was only just pulling on me ;-)

Sounds good, easy enough things to do i guess, I think I'd rather have a nice rebuilt 300 that looks the part than an older Td5 to be honest. Just personal choice. I'll keep my eye out for a nice one. cheers
