last night as i approached some lights, there was a slight clunk sound and i had no excellerator, left the car whilst i looked for a phone box, when i returned it started ok and the problem was gone, i procceded on a 25 mile journey with no problems.
Today it happened again but this time after 4 hours it would only drive in limp mode, any ideas?

well, best pay 20 quid gown the local garage and get that code read. then come back here with what it is. would give us a better chance in telling you whats up.
