Jumped in the TD5 auto this morning, started her up,let the handbrake off and all the electrics went off-Dead! Wiggled it about a bit back on!

The hand brakes sticking on which in't a problem as I'l whip the drum off this afternoon but why is the hand brake switch cutting all the electrics off-All even the clock goes dead???

Cheers

Jason

Disco 1's had a problem for a while of the handbrake cable acting as an earth point and occasionally getting very hot! ... could be something like this. Certainly I'd check all earth points/straps etc, especially the battery connections.

Cheers Mate:)

Bought the old girl a couple of months ago from a garage who had just changed the battery and the dim sh*t's had'nt put the body earth strap back on to inner wing so she's been earthing through the hand brake cable ever since:eek:

Now sorted:)

Nice one. ;)

Well done for posting back that it worked too, might help someone else!!

Hi all, I have the exact same problem with my 1999 TD5 Manual. Starts fine but let the handbrake off and everything cuts out. I'll check the earth connections and see if that sorts it.

Hi all, I had the exact same problem with my 1999 discovery td5 Manual. Would strart and run fine but the radio would cut out and come back on also the hand brake was getting hot.

The Problem turned out to be a bad earth to the body.

Fixed the bad earth and also added an earth cable from the engine to the earth strap on inner wing.

All good now.

with discos etc body ,chassis ,engine/transmission ,need earth to battery well ,cables can often look good but not conduct current ,jump leads can be used to prove the point by acting as extra earths ,clicking starter motor is usually contact kit that is needed about £10 on ebay

It was supposedly sealed for life.

Hoping I might be able to get some advice - I had the same problem with a corroded cable and earthing through the handbrake. Now I have changed the cable she started brilliantly - but the handbrake won’t release 🤦‍♂️ - any thoughts? Might it have “welded” itself stuck - where would everyone start? Thanks in advance

Hi, was it the earth cable you changed or handbrake cable ?
If the handbrake cable is nyloned lined & it was being used as the earth, it could have melted the nylon causing the handbrake lever not to release.
