I changed the pump on my TD5 90 and it just won't start! I did do the purge.

The starter is kicking in but no fuel is getting to the fuel filter.

The pump was buzzing up until the time I put fuel in...now the pump is not making any noise.

Anyone have any thoughts??

I'm going to be testing the relay shortly.

If someone can think of what it could be I would really appreciate it as I'm getting extremely frustrated.

How tight did you do the but but that holds the pump in?
If you put the ignition on does the pump come on?
Is the plug properly connected?

The pump is on tight and the plug in there was fine when we put the tank shield back on.

It doesn't come on with the ignition. It was coming on with the ignition up until we put fuel in and now it is silent.

The fuel pump fuse was blown, which I just found, however putting in a good fuse and changing and testing the relay did not solve the problem. Tested with an electrical tester and the relay is getting power.

The new pump was making a lot of noise up until we put fuel in....not sure if this is relevant. The fuse must have blown at the same time.

Aftermarket from Brit-Car. It was making a ton of noise. I did the air bleed. We put fuel in and then it stopped making noise.

There is power going to the relay and fuse.

Well that would explain the whining then, could have burned out the pump as they are crap quality and wear out easily

We ran power from the pump relay connector directly to the pump and it did not turn on...it drew over 15amps.

This has happened to other people before with aftermarket pumps?

Could an air leak cause the pump to burn out, or are they just poor quality?

Tested the pump by running 12v directly to it and it is shot. There is power coming to the connector going to the pump.

I cannot remember if I did the prime before or after I put fuel in...should this matter? Did I do something wrong when I installed it or is this just bad luck?

Also, since I am going to have to put a new pump in...does anyone have the part number for the td5 defender fuel pump metal locking ring and the plastic ring with ribs that goes inside?

Just ordered one earlier today. Is it common for the pump motor to go on the aftermarket one? I'm just thinking I may have done something wrong.

I appreciate all your help by the way.

Pattern part fuel pumps are just plain crap, between me and my old man we have got through god knows how many of them but a genuine will serve you well

Jut put in a new one with this crap pump.

Ok, just making sure it wasn't something I did wrong.

In regards to priming the tank, should I do it before or after I put fuel in? Or does it make no difference?

Running the pump dry out of the tank will kill it real quick!! The fuel cools it and its seals !! Dry it melts down nicely !! Test it with diesel in a can should be ok !!!

Thought so! Thank you. Going to put some fuel in and then turn the ignition to run...waiting on the pump now.
