Have just replaced the clutch in my 2000 90 taking the gearbox and transfer case out also replaced offside outrigger and did a fair bit of welding to the chassis.

While i was there i also put a new fuel pressure regulator in.

Reconnected the battery today and tried to start it, when first turned on the pump whirred as normal, but then went quiet, it now groans for a couple of seconds and you can hear fuel running, but it wont start. Popped the connectors of the regulator and there was nothing there, seem to remember there being a dribble when i first changed it. Does this sound like pump failure or air in the system?

Done the auto bleed a few times and it just makes the same noise, no whirring noise like it used to.

The purging process can take quite a while on the TD5 once the fuel system has been breached to change a pump, filter or regulator, and I usually find it takes quite a bit of switching the ignition on and off, pumping the accelerator pedal and turning the engine over to get it going again. There's a recommended purge sequence in the handbook but I find it is usually not enough on its own and needs repeating a few times. Funny noises from the pump are not unusual, especially when there is still air in the system. If they persist it might be time for a new one but often they settle down once the air is eventually eliminated. Sometimes it helps if you let the system 'settle' for a few minutes in between attempts to start the car.

Rather embarrassingly seems it was a bad earth noticed all the switches on the dash were lighting up when the pump was trying to run, sorted it out and its working properly. Flat battery now but hopefully it will run once charged....

While we're on the subject, another thing I replaced on mine was the fuel pump relay under the driver's seat. On the old one the pins were loose and I could make the engine go faster or slower by waggling them. It carries quite a bit of current so I think it cooks itself over a long period of time.
