have any of you good people removed the middle exhaust silencer and replaced with a staight through pipe? if so, what differences are there, does it improve performence or just make more noise.

Lots of lovely noise! And a little bit performance too, with a k and n filter the turbo spools up quicker and you get a little more low down power

It sounds nice.

But on a standard tune engine, with no other mods, I'd argue that any performance gains are little more than placebo.

I would argue that as standard it wouldn't make a difference but it's worth it for the noise alone. I love that whistle and I get it low down now as well. My engine is tuned though.
