Hi all
I am looking for the correct torque figure for the TD5 sump drain plug for my 2003 Disco. The Haynes manual indicates 35Nm (26lbf ft), but the LR workshop manual indicates 23Nm (17lbf ft). Can anyone advise me which is the correct figure for this item. I dont wish to overtighten and strip the thread or for it to work loose.
Thank you in advance for any assistance in this.

I try to be as gentle as possible with mine because it's only a soft alloy jobby. It's not a high stress component, you just don't want it rattling out by accident.

A new copper washer each removal is best as that takes the stress. If you repeatedly use the same one it won't squash any more and you start to stress the thread;) like to nip it up1/8 of a turn, that's half a quater and it won't be to tight or too loose.:)

The first time I gave it a service I discovered that the plug and been done up incredibly tightly and the corners had been taken off the hex. I could feel the sump flexing as I tried to get it out. No sign of any washer at all. The previous service had been done by a main dealer garage, naturally. Since then I've been using the new washers that come in the service kit. And got it a new plug which actually has some corners on it.

Fit one of those oil drain kits (can't remember the name sorry!)

Basically you screw a valved adaptor into the sump replacing the drain plug - when you want to drain the oil, you screw the hose onto the adaptor which pushes the valve open and the oil flows down the hose. When you've finished you remove the hose and the valve closes again. Then you screw a sealing cap over the adaptor to keep it clean. I've had one of these on for a few years now and its brilliant -all the oil goes into the waste oil can, no spills on the drive :)

Not cheap, but really good, and it means you'll never have to worry about stripping the thread.

Thanks very much to you all for taking the time to answer, much appreciated.
I like the idea of the drain plug kit, where might I be able to obtain one?
