as above really , going to have a quick peek at a friends disco 2 td5 , he has a few problems including possible head gasket and air suspention dropping overnight

before I do any work on it I want to check for oil in the red plug , if so theres no point in him repairing it as hes just going to have hasstle

so as its 40 mile away do I need any tools to get the plug off? is it under any covers secured with bolts ect??

No - the ECU is under the plastic cover next to the jack. There might be a phiilps self-tapper holding it in. The red plug itself might need a bit of wrestling to get it out against the suction of the oil against the rubber gasket. Just press the catch in with one hand whilst maybe using a prying tool (large flathead screwdriver etc.) for a bit of leverage.

cheers , will have a look at it in the next few days , see what the best solution is for him , if theres oil there id suggest he just sells it as even after head gasket and other work he will have problems sooner or later , as a new engine loom is nearly £400 its not worth the hasstle of repairing it , as it is it just looses a little water a week but not much

thanks for the reply I know what I need to take now :)

If there is oil in the loom just replace the injector loom fairly cheap and the main loom will drain out eventually

just change the injector loom, not much money.use leccy contact cleaner on the connectors etc.

Injector loom - £20 odd quid (probably a britpart one, mine's in a britpart box...)

There will still be residual oil in the main loom which finds its way to the red plug, but eventually will become clean, assuming you keep spraying it with contact cleaner ;)
