I've borrowed my dad's defender whilst I rebuild mine and the dash lights have stopped working. When I turn the lights on, none of the gauges light up, and the light that tells you the side lights are on has stopped also.

Full beam and handbreak lights still work though.

It's a J reg 90 with a 3.9 v8 and a TD5 dash/bulkhead. The clocks and main wiring loom appear to be mostly of TD5 origin and a few bits of another loom. I can't seem to find the Haynes book of lies and there are no diagrams on the covers of the main fuse box, engine bay or under seat boxes but could anyone tell me which fuse to check first?

Depends on how it has been bod errm done

I think in this instance I'd check the switch first

Do you have dip beam. My lights went out in Spain whilst doing 70, the switch had melted. Steering column off cut and joined cables and was good to continue journey.
New switch from island with post £30.

Thanks for the quick reply guys

The headlights etc all work fine, it's purely the gauges that have stopped working, along with some of the lights on the little warning panel.

Assuming it is the switch, where would I find that? - electrics are not my strong point

Further googling reveals there should be a fuse in the engine bay box that powers all of the faulty bits, I'll have a ganders and see what i can find.

Easiest is try the fuses first, it should be in the main fuse panel and should be no.4 a 10 amp. Strange question but does the horn work? Or hazards?

This might help with the engine bay fuse box, although mines under the drivers seat.

Checked the fuses and they are all ok, both the horn and hazards/indicators work as they should.

I had presumed all the sidelights were working still, but on closer inspection only the ones on the nearside are working. The front offside works on full beam but not dipped. I will dig the circuit tester out tomorrow.
