Following my post yesterday where I suspected my clutch may be one the way out after long time noise from spigot bush, today when I first went out I the car I tried a couple of things.
As usual on cold mornings the spigot bush was droaning away. I pumped the clutch pedal a couple of times and as normal, the droaning only starts when the clutch is approx 2/3 of the way down. Other day it was doing continously even with clutch released and gearbox in neutral, that was a first. I tried this morning to slip the clutch with handbrake on, botb in 2nd gear, then in first, both times the engine stalled immediately with a jerk, as I would expect in normal conditions. The car drove normally too after that.
Does anyone else thinknits likely that yesterday morning my feeling of clutch slipping may have been down to a sticky slave cylinder? I suspect this may have also been the cause of the constant spigot bush noise even with the clutch released and gearbox neutral two days ago?
Opinions would be appreciated
 
You have no speed differential between the bush and the first motion shaft if the clutch is released and you're in neutral or in a gear. If you still get the droning noise under those conditions then it is the release bearing.

I had exactly same noises on my 2004 D2 TD5. Ended up with new Clutch and Flywheel. Expensive but Car much better afterwards.
 
Thanks guys, I actually just confirmed my fears as even tho it felt ok around town I just returned home via the dual carriageway, gave it a bit of oomph as a test and mrs (more sensitive snitch than me) asked what burning smell was. She didnt get it when I said thats the smell of 500 quid burning. So at earliest opportunity, new clutch, spigot bush and release bearing, and may as well have the flywheel too rather than the take it out twice.
