105,000 mike TD5 has developed a strange problem with the auto gearbox.
Starts and revs fine.
Pulls away ok 1st and 2nd then get to 25/30mph it judders and won't go any faster. Like the box is stuck.

when did you change the oil anf filter last time? it must be changed at least once at 24K miles or 24 months or it starts causing all kind of trouble.

the oil is VERY important in a autobox and you can't have a proper diagnose untill it's not certain that the oil is in good shape or not... drain out a drop and see how it looks/smells

As Fery says the oil quality is vital in an autobox, so when you drain a little out you need to examine the colour and the smell.

Colour - when the oil is in good nick it is clear and ruby red in colour. When it's knâckered it is dark brown.

Smell - if it just has an oil smell that's ok but if it smells burnt then it's buggered.

Change the oil is the first thing to do before anything else.

Buy yourself 6 ltrs of Dexron III auto box fluid and a service kit which includes a gasket, a filter and often a new copper sump plug sealing ring.

Starting with a cold engine, ensure that you can open and remove the filler plug on the front face of the sump BEFORE EMPTYING all the old oil out.

Remove the sump plug and allow the oil to drain out. It's usually a total of about 4.5 ltrs that comes out. Leave it to drain for as long as poss. especially if it is ****ty brown.

Re-fit the sump plug. Now remove the sump, the old mesh filter, fit the new filter. Start to re-fill the gearbox - you will find that you can only get in approx 2 to 2.5ltrs of oil at this stage before it starts to come back out - this is perfectly normal.

Now start the engine, and cycle through each position of the gear box lever - P, R, N, D, 3, 1 and then back to P LEAVE THE ENGINE RUNNING;

Now get back underneath and continue filling the gearbox - approx 2ltrs - until it starts to flow back out. The box is now full, so you can replace the level/fill plug and the job is done.

Good description. Filling is best done with a cheap garden pressure sprayer with the end cut off the lance. Fill with ATF, pump up pressure and fill box, easy:)

Still check the colour of the autobox oil if this TD5 is new to you,and change it quick if not cherry red.
