i knew it was too good to be true. Hippo running very well up until this morning when it started feeling low on power at all speeds.

First noticed it was a bit sluggish up a slight hill on a dual carriageway at 70, and noticed some smoke following me. Nearly home so pressed on and found it running very rough around town, sounding quite tappety with no power.

Pulled up it shook the car just sat idling, then I noticed smoke escaping from the bonnet! Shut off and gingerly popped the hood but thankfully no flames. Started up again and the engine was shaking a lot and smoke was billowing out from under the plastic cover. May have been more towards the back but the cover diverted a lot of it so not too sure. Just wanted to shut it off. Sounded like an old knackered tractor.

130,000 odd miles, last year did the filters and updated pcv + egr bypass. Been running sweet all this time.

Any ideas? Worried it may be turbo.

Sticking PVC valve or EGR valve. Is the oil level correct? A failed turbo won't affect the idle as it's hardly boosting.

Fitted the cyclone pcv and egr bypass last year. Oil level fine.

Been out and had a good look. Found nr.3 injector clamp has broken sometime before I got the car, on the half thats left the star headed stud has walked out of the head (or maybe sheared), letting the injector walk out too spraying lovely dead dinosaurs all over the engine cover (and engine) causing the smoke and lack of power. So not as bad as I feared, but still have to book it in as I don't have the tools. I'm worried that the bolt has sheared needing drilling out - I've never been successful doing that...

Hi everyone Have read everbody's advice in here some of it brilliant but anyways my 04 TD4 freelander 1 has been running real rough and very smokey at idle and take off for ages. Well I've tried everything and followed loads of advice. Swapped the Egr for a delete, new fuel & air Filters, replaced loads if not all vaccum pipes, its a bmw replacment pcv and it still ran rough but Redex and others helped at times. Well this morning I decided to look into the fuel tank as my old 1.8 petrol had the pump in there. Well there is a pump in there with no filter built into it (where it used to be) but the bottom of the pumps filter was really badly clogged with greasy grime. I opened it up as well and the small little metal filter inside is completely clogged black and its so bad it was sucking little bits through it and into the fuel system. Well obviously I took my time and cleaned it all meticulously. sorry for this being so long but once started she idling as sweet as with no smoke (so Far) but I honestly think I've found the source of my trouble I hope! Hope this helps others been trying to solve this for a month or 2 and was convinced it was the injectors. Thanks again for everybodys ideas in Landyzone Brilliant! Roy

Nice fix there, but... We like pictures, lots of them. So you'll have to dismantle it all and do it again!

more common to find it in fuel that stands a lot
e.g. boats .. farm tractors .. etc etc

all diesels will have ( or should have ) a means to drain collected water
out of the fuel system ..
on the td4 with the filter and lp.pump under the rear wheel arch
there's a screw-plug underneath .. that drains the 'sedimenter'
that's supposed to be drained every so often .. ( once or twice a year )
open the plug and drain some fuel into a glass container
so you can see when the fuel runs clear ..

as for RedX helping .. no idea ..
the various fuel additives on sale usually have a safety data sheet online
that lists the ingredients .. then its a case of looking up the names on google
to find out what they are used for
most have a detergent for cleaning .. maybe a cetane booster for smoother combustion
and something for added lubrication ..

Diesel Rhino is the only one i've come across that also disperses water in fuel
i used it years ago when driving artic-hgv's in north america .. ( sold there as Diesel Aid )
'cause the winter temps there would cause any water in the fuel to freeze up
resulting in a fuel blockage ..
D.R. also has a biocide that kills any bacteria ( diesel bug )

much depends on the fuel storage facilities before it gets pumped into vehicle tanks
and how long the fuel might remain standing in the vehicle tank
