Well there is towing and there is towing.
First, make sure you are road legal before you set out, trailer lights working, number plate. Wrong cop on the wrong day! Speed limit in UK is 50mph, dont know about France, ask Slob.
Towing depends on the vehicle, practice makes perfect. You shouldnt have any bother with the Td4, it should be a pleasure to tow with. Just make sure you dont cut the corners too tight. Plus on full lock make sure the trailer clears the rear of the FL.
Then there is reversing
, I dont look back, too much neck strain, instead I use my mirrors. If you line the trailer up straight first or as close to the angle that you want to reverse, it makes life a lot easier.
Then watching in the mirrors, for example, if the trailer veers towards your left mirror then you turn the steering wheel to the left to correct. Small adjustments at a time otherwise you end up over correcting. Its confusing at first cause you think you should be turning the wheel the other way. If you mess it up, dont panic, just take her forward and get the reverse angle right, start again.
Is it a double axle trailer? these are more stable towing at speed, can require some effort when reversing, tend to get a bit of tyre scrub, as opposed to a single axle.
Reversing with a MOD ring and pin hitch, now thats another story.

open all the windows and put blower on full! reversing a trailer is a black art that takes a bit of practice .You WILL sweat like a bull as everybody tell you how to do it, I find that a good pair of mirror shades hide your embarresment
four wheel trailers are much easier than two wheel as they tend to turn slower giving you time to catch it. if all else fails unhitch it and push !

Last March i towed a single axel..ivor williams 8ft x 5 ft boxtrailer with me L series, from the north of Spain to South Wales and back..the old girl done good and still give me 28/30 mpg...just take your time and its a doddle, actually in the process of moving me mate with the same and she is going well and most of its up hill.
Oh when i done the trip i was up to almost 1900m above sea level in some parts and there was a bit of snow and ice around..only problem i find with the Freelander is the lack of a good turning circle..just takes a bit of practise..

Above all else, take your time. Do try to make sure that you're NOT up against it and having to push the car too hard.
Broadly speaking towing is straightforward, jus make sure you have adjusted your speed expectations downwards and you'll be ok.
Max speed in France for towing a trailer is 90 kph or 56 mph.

Is it a flat bed trailer to put the gaylander on when it breaks down I hear car trailers is a bit rare in France

REET. . .Ming needs er bit er help, wots the td4 like fer towing say a box trailer need to tow bout 380 miles in France un i have niffer towed before [well only tratter boys gettin all clever int muddy stuff
Where abouts are you headed - we're in central France about 400 mls from Boulogne.
