So folks I'm looking to purchase a Freelander1 in the not too distant future and was wondering which engine variant to go for I have approx budget of £1500 maybe a touch more !

Both are reliable if looked after. I've got a td4 but have no problem with the L series. Your budget may make the choice for you. Just get the best one for your cash.

L-series roolz . :D

L-series can be serviced/repaired with basic tools set. That engine don't have VVC Turbocharger, have simple fuel injection system, and less needful sensors than Td4. Also construction and access to many elements it's easier than BMW powertrain.

It's controlled by analogue electronics - so can be diagnosed/repaired on trip with simple multimeter and couple of wires. Td4 have CAN network, so could be more problematic sometimes.

Tune it a little and its more than enough :)

As said above. L series is a lot easier and simpler. Td4 is more refined but more to I wrong

I prefer my l series but it depends what comforts you want

Just read on here all the info you can. Plenty of threads on this. Look at lots and buy the one you like best.

Me? I went for one of the last TD4 autos on the facelift shape. But they are out of your budget of £1500.

The TD4 engine is perfect for the Freelander but with your budget I'd rather have a decent L than a worn out TD4.

Remember the L-series might be a good engine but it's in a 14 to 16 year old car body with all the age related problems !
Don't the pre 2000 models have more transmission problems too ?
