Hello all , just a thought , whats the main concern you have of failure , of your td4 freelander ? , is it drive train eg cracked ird casing/vcu/finaldrive , or the clutch/master/slave cylinder , or the turbo , looking on ere , its stuff nightmares are made off , even the injectors ! i have had mine for nearley 3 years and its been good , touch wood , (thats a ryme) but all the above are in the back of my mind , any one else share the same

obviously petrol freelander owners have it doubled , no offence intended

All of the major stuff has been done on my TD4 with exception of the turbo 165000 and still kicking in when needed however at masses amounts of money for a new one or a few hundered quid for a recon one i am not looking forward to it going bang

All of the above!! Which is why she sadly left us yesterday for someone else to worry about. But in fairness, I had her (td4 2003) for 6 years and apart from intercooler hoses, never had any failure at all. Did the usual upgrades, and lifted etc green laned her, and serviced by me.

I suppose because of the lack of failures I got nervous!!!! It'll happen soon!!

I have mine since May, Feul pump was replaced after a month, turbo hoses have split, new ones ordered, VCU is off to be replaced, as a precaution and I reckon my clutch is going, oh the joys!

Run prettywell any make and you are waiting for something , but at least with a Landy you are driving what you like in the meantime. eg the turbo on a Freelander is on a load of BMW,s The jatco auto box is in about six other makes etc
Personally with all the Landrovers (everone except a Lightweight) that I have owned they have been no worse than other makes and a lot better than some. JMHO

I've owned a variety of cars over the years from Alfa Romeos, to diesel VW Passats, 5 series BMW's and so on. All the owner forums are obviously full of owners trying to find solution to problems with their cars and I don't really see here as any different - apart from an extra level of enthusiasm for our cars.

Biggest ongoing problem I have is due to my Synergy 2 causing uneven idle/running due due to an issue with one of the connectors - remove it and the slowness frustrates me!

All them fuel pumps worry me,2001 TD4 2 low pressure & 1 Injection.
Previous owner did them at 70,000 miles.Now done 141,000,are they due again.

Turbo not so much a worry.He had that changed for a 40,000 miler before I bought it.The original had seized.When I changed the Crankcase filter it had been fitted badly and was all crunched up.

Drive train is the next cause for possible sleepless nights,(bit whiny)
No the VCU is not seized.

Saying that the vehicle is in good nick and I am prepared to sort anything that goes wrong as I feel we have bonded.
Its got bits of my skin on it and I have its oil under my finger nails.

The more you look at this forum the more worried you'll be about yer hippo. You'll feel as if it's suddenly going to fail the next time you try to start it. Every little squeak, rattle, knock etc will get you thinking it needs repaired again. It'll make yer paranoid.

Well, the clutch is gonna be done next week, probs just under a grand all in, my props are in the shed waiting to be refitted when I buy a new VCU and bearings, I've had the odd electrical component fail, i.e. the drivers door solenoid, brake and reverse light switches, but these have been relatively cheap in the grand scheme of things. Things with these bloody cars, they are comfortable to drive, have a load of grunt once all the little engine mods have been done, and they look quite neat too.

My injectors are faulty and seized in the head ran injector cleaner through it for the MOT and it passed (smoke test only 0.3) but still produces blue smoke when cold and sounds quite rough when idling. seized injector can result in replacement engine! major nightmare.

Military training dies hard - I keep a 'Faults' Clipboard in the car and just add to it when I discover anything that needs to be done or fixed.

There is a high priority and a low priority column.

Every weekend I see to the top 3 items on the list.

Last weekend it was a new LED sidelight bulb, replace a turbo hose, and wire up the rear exhaust again as a temp measure.

Next weekend it'll be new low-beam headlight bulbs, fit the new exhaust (if it arrives before Saturday) and adjust the handbrake.

My main worry is that some weekend there will be nothing to do .......

Had my 2002 td4 es for just over a year now,and the only worry is the whine on the ird,the vcu is fine,been like this 5 months.
