Have got a 2001 TD4 Auto, 96K on the clock, its developed a bad flatspot at about 2500rpm and is generally lacking in power to be honest, engine has had recent full service inc. fuel filter, turbo filter, air filter etc.
EGR is Blanked, Vacuum hoses to the turbo actuator have been replaced as they were perished, turbo hoses have been checked.
Starts fine but you can feel the flatspot even just revving the engine whilst standing, sort of clears after 3000 ish but makes it a right slug to drive with the auto,
Any ideas?

my 1st thought would be 'maf' sensor
that can be checked by disconnecting said sensor 'n see if it runs better ..
( that will cause it to overfuel a bit .. so don't leave it disconnected .. replace the sensor )

worth checking the wiring plug/socket connection to the fuel-rail pressure sensor
if that's dirty or has had moisture ingress it can cause weird problems
( do a google search for 'contralube' .. that stuff will keep the connections corrosion free)

@ 96k it could be the low-pressure fuel pump starting to act up
although most report that the engine won't rev through the rev. range on load
( e.g. hits a brick wall at 3000 rpm in 3rd gear )

Thanks, I'll try just running with MAF disconnected, I tried replacing it with another I had lying around but that made it worse, however I'm not sure the MAF I found was a freelander one.
Gotta say symptoms do sound very similar.

it's got to be the right MAF for the vehicle
or flat-spots etc will most likely occur

at the bottom of the 'maf sensor problems' page be a list of numbers
those correspond to the maf signal received by the ecu
and directly related to the amount of fuel that is allowed thru the injectors ..
.. mostly under 2500rpm ..

i think it's mainly to get rid of the run of black smoke on go-pedal-down acceleration
that one can see emitting from older types of diesel engines ..
especially if the injector pump settings have been altered for more get-up-and-go
