Hello Everyone! I'm back in Freelander ownership having owned a facelift Freelander 1 td4 about 10 years ago. I'd forgotten how much I love the things and when one came up at a good price I bought it. It has the usual Freelander issues which I'm slowly working through, including a dodgy injector. I'm told injector number 4 readings are not right but I've been told injector 4 is the oil cap side, then I've also been told it's the gearbox side! Does anyone have the definitive answer? Sorry if this is an obvious answer and has been answered before, I've looked through the posts and cannot find the answer. Ta in advance for any info.

Cylinder 1 is engine front (if mounted traditionally for a rear wheel drive!) so on a Freelander with a transverse engine cylinder 1 is the water pump and crank pulley end.

Amazing, ta Andyfreelandy! On a separate note I'm doing the thermostat mod you've done IE the 32mm to 38mm coupling and back to 32mm inline thermostat for an auto. No way could I get the gates thermostat in enough to make it work with the original hose - I reckon I need to hit the gym 🤣

Andy is quite right, cylinder 1 is at the drive belt end of the engine, and 4 at the gearbox end of the engine.

I can cast some insight as to why you've been told the opposite. The Freelander 2, which is a completely different vehicle has it's cylinder numbers the other way round, i.e. No 1 is at the gearbox end, and No 4 is at the drive belt end.

Thank you, that would explain it, I had a Freelander 2 a couple of years ago as well. I prefer the simplicity of working on the original Freelander to be honest. This forum is amazing, you can find out so much from it! I'd better get the spanners out at the weekend!

Brilliant thank you Arctic 2. Swapped the injector over and things are a bit better now. Going to give it a couple of good runs to see how things go. I've just noticed a bit of a whine starting from the front, hoping it's not start of the IRD fail. It seems to be online with road/engine speed and sounds like a wheel bearing noise. I'll get underneath and have a look/wiggle of the prop to see if I notice any play. Doesn't seem to be any knocking on reverse/full lock. Fingers crossed 😬

Good news then a little worry right after, drop a bottle of this into you fuel tank.

Ta I'll order some in a mo. I've found by adding some two stroke into the tank at fill up has helped smooth things out but not sure how good doing this would be for the old gal long term

+1 for this. On your advice I used it every couple or three tankfuls (and always before a road trip) all the time I owned Hippocrates. I had no injector problems in 80k miles and superb fuel economy (43 mpg on a trip to and from Skye). Excellent additive and not overpriced.

On the Freelander 1 TD4 (BMW M47 engine), injector numbering runs from the timing belt/chain end of the engine across to the gearbox. That means injector 1 is on the gearbox side and injector 4 is on the oil filler cap side. So if you’ve been told injector 4 is playing up, it’s the one nearest the oil cap.
