Hi,

Is there a good time to trade in a Freelander? Or do you just keep runnning them till they die?

I'm on Freelander No.3.. the first 2 where unmitigated money pits with series of costly repairs from engine rebuilds to drive shafts, but touch wood, No.3 has been ok so far.

Its a 53 plate, 113,000 on clock, looks good for its age (HSE, black, leather seats etc), good service history & generally looked after. That said its starting to play up a bit.

Mis-fires, bit too much white smoke on cold-start, noisy ride, CV sound clicky on tight turning, hill descent & traction control warning lights randomly illuminated - you get the picture.

So I've got the uneasy feeling I'm due a serious failure. I'm strapped for cash as I'm getting married in a few weeks & the last thing I want is a nasty surprise. So I'm considering trading it in now while it still looks good & runs okay. Idea being I pocket the cash to get me through the wedding, maybe pick up a £500 banger to tide me over till I've got my money back in better order (I mean to blindly throw at another Land Rover).

Any advise gratefully received!

Many thanks

Gareth

If it were me I'd cancel the wedding, flog the rings/dress, see if I could get the deposits back on the church/cars/reception and put the money to one side for the next repair. I'd probably eat the cake.

It doesn't sound too bad. Older cars do need repairs. If it's generally running ok, then keep it. If there's problems with it ask someone for a price to fix it. Might not cost as much as you think. If you do get married then whats yours is hers etc. Ask her to pay for half of the repairs.

Wecome to the forum. :)

Well I've done some extensive cost analysis and its a close run thing. the misses works out slightly more economical over the the next 5 years than the Freelander.. So the misses wins by a nose.. Selling the motor.
