Hello all,

When I did the engine oil change on our Freelander, after re-checking after a weeks, i may have over filled it by 2-3mm according to the dipstick when engine is cold.

I have asked elsewhere people saying anything from emptying it all out and starting again, or simply leave it.

The Freelander runs as it should for the past week, on both short and long journeys, and start fines with no obvious smoke. Shall I drain a little out from the sump, unless there is an easier method or am I really ok on just leaving it.

engine has done 123k miles

hiya , can't see a problem with it just being a few mm overfilled , if it worries u that much u could get a small rubber tube , put it down the dipstick tube , could buy one unless you've already got one is an oil syringe , which is normally used to empty ur rear diff and refill it as it hasn't got a drain plug , u can buy them from machine mart , u could then suck a little bit out if u wished

saves u having to take off the sump guard and all the mess in trying to drain the oil out and getting it back in with the oil still coming out

Well, when you said "overfilled", I though you meant, like, really overfilled!!! - so IMHO, 2-3 mm over the high mark on the dipstick will not bother it one iota. So my personal opinion, leave it alone...

IF you really feel the need to reduce the level, then.... In terms of other ways to get the minimal excess out - you could use a "vacuum fluid extractor", with the pipe down the dipstick tube - they are about £20 ish off that well known auction site. Silverline is the brand I have.

This also reminded me of a girl I knew, who, when topping her oil up... read the oil filler cap on her BMW... and since it said, "Oil - Fill" on it, she did !!

Like the BMW story lol, saw a video clip where a woman pours oil all over the engine, rather than it on you tube to that made me chuckle.

You can usually go upto around half a litre over the max mark before trouble starts. People go for the full mark all the time and overdo it!
