Hello,

I've a td5 90 which I run on bio and have done for 2 years and covered 20k so far, I'm hopefully going to Switzerland soon and would love to be able to take my own fuel (not thinking about the money, just more for the pleasure of getting to Switzerland and back on my own fuel) Would probably need 250ltrs extra.

I've thought about a tank for the back (water tank with baffles) but just wondered if anyone has some suggestions please??

Also what would be the chances of getting stopped at customs???

To get an extra 250 litres on a 90 you're talking not just one but two new onboard tanks as well as a few jerry cans. Your tank at the moment probably holds about 56 litres and is already mounted at the back. You have very little space inside so a tank in there won't be all that big. You can get tanks which fit in the wheel arches but they're only about 45 litres. Or there's one which fits under the passenger side of the seatbox but again its not large.

dont forget weight, water weighs 1kg per liter, deisel ever so slightly more as its more dense, so your 250L for deisel will weight more than 250kgs, a big chunk of your payload.
Using bio knocks off alot of plastic tanks, especially water ones.

if you REALLY want to take your own fuel, Id be looking more at a fuel trailer,

also, what the impact of this would be at foreign customs etc would be I have no idea.

I can probably hire you a bowser but when it's fully loaded it will be at your maximum towing capacity

Surely diesel is less dense than water as it floats on water? 250 litres is still a heavy load though.

Would it not be cheaper to buy whilst abroad? Also the extra weight will reduce you already fragile economy.

Thanks for the replies, I can make the stuff for 45p per L so think it probably would be worth the saving.

The weight isn't really a problem as i'd just be taking some camping gear.. Might be worth just taking a few 25ltr containers and dumping them on the way.

I've been getting around 330 miles from a tank of bio, what's the average?? (And that isn't steady driving haha)

Specific gravity of water is 1 so 1 x 1 litre = 1kg.
Specific gravity of diesel is between 0.81 and 0.96 depending on the exact formulation so worst case scenario .96 x 1 litre = .96kg.

Personally, I do think it's a nice idea to motor to Switzerland and back on your own fuel, but is it worth all the hassle?
