Hello Again,

I'm just trying to neaten up a few thing on the RR.

My tailgate hinge cover has lost it spring load so it stays up even if the tailgate is lowered.

I can see a couple of spring wires, but I can't see what they act on to close the cover. I also can't find removal and refitting instructions in RAVE. Can anyone point me to the right page, or failing that tell me how to fix it!

many thanks,

Al.

Buy a new one. The springs act on tiny little plastic lugs which break off, then the springs don't do anything. Not possible to fix, I've tried. Second hand ones will be in a simialr condition, tried them too. Think they are about £50 or so. Currently mine is in the same state as yours, lower the bottom tailgate, flop the hinge cover down.

Yes it's fixable I drilled two holes adjacent to the end of the spring near broken clip and bent spring end to loop then put two small bolts through I twisted the spring a couple of times to give the return tension and fit loop on end of spring over bolt and fit nut!
Yes you see two small screw bolt heads on top of plastic hinge cover but you also see £ 50 in yer wallet me son!

A little piece of string or similar connected between the cover and the lower tailgate so the tailgate just pulls the cover over the vertical as it's opened.

One of mine has the same problem. Never really thought about it long enough to realise it was a problem. It was just annoying. This will be first job on the list tomorrow.:D

A persuasive argument! I think I'll try and effect a repair for now, and try to replace it when more funds allow.

Having just bought the thing, I've got a few little bits I want fixing and the tailgate flap is further down the list than say the abs accumulator! The pump is pumping all the time so I think it's duff.

Can I just add, I've been running old cars and motorbikes for years (I like a dirty challenge and loads of car for little money), and being on the forums I have never come across so much willingness to mend and fix by whatever means to keep the things on the road.

It's amazing what a bit of thought, some willingness to have a go, a hammer and a roll of gaffer tape will do. The ingenuity shown would give Blue Peter a run for their money.

fixed mine by attaching a short length of tent pole shock cord through a loop on the back and attaching it behind the lower tailgate carpet, works perfectly, cost £0.00
