Hi all,

I've recently become a Freelander owner and I got a knock on my window the other day from a motor cyclist who told me that I had only one brake light working..

I've had a look at the rear end of the vehicle and the lights seem to be completely wrong.. Maybe you guys can help me understand what light is supposed to do what!

Right now if I turn on the lights to full beam I seem to only have the bottom two red lights on at the back (in the bumper) but these seem to also be the brake lights!?

What are the two higher up for?
Is my wiring all screwed up?

It would make more sense to me if the bottom lights were the rear/sidelights and the higher ones were brake lights and indicators.

And help is much appreciated!

Nope thats the way they are..the ones higher up are fogs and reverse lights

.Silly I know

Wow, yeah that is silly.
I think I'll have a look at altering this.

The top lights should be brake lights.
My centre high level bulb has gone which makes it all the worse. Does anyone know the part number so I can order one asap?

Thx

Nope, its because you have spare on tailgate and this is side opened so it could cover light.
That's why brake light are in bumper. This type is on EVERY 4x4 with side open tailgate up tu 2002-2003 IIRC. If you try to change those - make them illegal.

Wow! Do I feel stupid now!
Bought 2002 V6 in CA couple of weeks ago, and trying to put it back on the road. Changed the engine, and one of the "problems" I was beating my head over, was "no brake lights"! "Third" one (above the spare tire), and two in the bumper work. I tried EVRYTHING to get the other two to work, to no avail. I was even contemplating to "hard wire" them in the series with the ones on the bumper!! So they are NOT supposed to work with the rest of them? (the ones in the rear fenders)

Nope, lights in D post's (fender) are Fog guards and reversing lights. Those not working with brake lights.
Brake lights are together with tail lights on bumper.

THANK YOU! My wife was reluctant to take her Hippo to the store the other night, stating that she doesn't want to be pulled over for inop brake lights! She'll be shocked when I tell her that her Hippo's lights are A-OK!

when I brought my first freelander after the wife had ask for hers back after 6 months, I did not like just the bottom ones in the bumper, so I got hold of some bulb holders and then the top two were also side lights as well as fog . I did ask a MOT inspector first and he said it was ok to do that, I keep meaning to do the same to my 2006 hse auto the same.

There will be no problem if you ADD a function to fogs (so double side/brake lights) problem will occur if you swap them.

Some 4x4 have double side/brake lights like Pajero or some model year of patrol :)
Oh, and Disco 300 with lights from 200 :p
