Righty-ho chaps. Now as i'm sure you're aware, most of us have friends who believe they know everything about landys, i have a couple and they are given me cross information.

The problem is thus, i have on my MOT Failure sheet this....

005 Nearside front Axle swivel joint has excessive play in a swivel pin
006 Offside front Axle swivel joint has excessive play in a swivel pin

and on an advisory

010 Offside front hub leaking oil.

Now i'm being told 010 is likely to be caused by 006 and i should purchase two kits (at about £100 ea) and do both sides, ball, swivel, seals the lot. Yet another Landy owner is telling me to replace the top pins & bearings (as these usually go through lack of oil) and plonk a load of one shot grease in. :confused:

Now from a cost point of view, option 2 I likealot. I'm interested in getting the truck back on the road ASAP as when the frontroopermu is sold i'll be without a vehicle. If I have to spend a couple of hundred on kits in twelve months time then thats ok. Money is very tight at the minute.

So based on that gibbering nonsense, opinions/ideas please.
 
if its a disco chrome ball and swivel use bearings (606666)top and bottom and pins dont wear bearings do ,if not too bad removing some shims under top pin can take up play ,seal on ball often leaks if ball is pitted /rusty if so needs replacing if not just bearings need looking at

id try removing shim first if swivel when turned by hand feels smooth but has no play then job done mot
 
I once had a similiar fail, the MOT man told me to remove a shim, I came on here and explained the problem and was advised to tighten the 52mm hub nut instead, guess who was right. are you not using one shot swivel housing grease in your hubs?

wheel bearings and swivel pins are seperate things ,you would notice if someone made wrong diagnosis while checking yourself
 
A job I have just completed. If you have the cash then just go for it and replace the bearings and swivel seals. I find the biggest headache is having it off the road and stripped down and the ammount of time it all takes. For a few more quid you can replace the parts that wear and be certain it isn't going to cause you a problem again anytime soon. Yes its a bit more money but you have the certainty that you wont need to do it more than once.
 
Imho you need to replace just the swivel pins bearings And seals not expensive but it takes a few hours per side mainly cos of the tine to clean parts it's a filthy job!

I have the near side hub apart at the moment and ordered a swivel kit from dingocroft for 45 GBP plus freight to nz ouch

I ordered the other side as well as no doubt I'll have to do that side one day soon....

My issue was abs light coming on due to repeating air gap issues and I found a watery mess in the hub due to no oil and top swivel thrust bearing washers in several pieces .... Adjusting the swivel by removing shims in my case would have hid the problem for a while maybe.....

The root cause of my issue was the large swivel oil seal leaking the oil out Of the housing and the swivel bearings suffered as consequence I was lucky as the cv joint seems ok even tho the oil had leaked out And it had run dry for gawd knows how long I guess the Previous owners mechanics thought the cv joints shared the same oil as the diff

Just to be clear the wheel bearings run in grease and swivels/cv in oil, or grease if you opt for one shot they do not share the same lube provided the swivel seals are working ok! the diff runs in oil not shared with the cv hub or wheel bearings

I'm not sure what your asking, but correct air gap and clear pulses are required for abs to work

It sounds to me like your swivel pins and/or bearings are shot, but you could just try taking out whatever shims are in place and that might tighten the swivels up enough.

If you're going to order some spares get two seal kits, two top and two bottom swivel pins, 4 bearings.

2 x DA3165P | Swivel Kit - no ball - front axle non ABS from JA032850

2 x STC3435 | One-Shot Grease
 
thanks, i'll try the pins & bearings first.

As for ABS, in order for mine to work right i'd need to fit it first :eek:)
 
swivel pins dont wear only the bearings do,bearings are 606666,and to replace either bearing you never need to remove bottom pin,
 
Well the top pin off my car is worn and so is the bush it fits into but I'm only replacing the pin which should be fine as I could not detect any shake in the wheel anyway

In my earlier post which was meant to answer the first post I did not mean to ask a question in my case it was Just the abs issue that caused me to take the hub apart not a mot failure or detectable shake and I'm glad I did given the condition of the hub insides!

I took the advice elsewhere on this forum to replace the big hub seal when doing the pins but it's not essential to do that and using grease instead of oil will certainly reduce the leaking - it is a bit more work and cost to replace the big seal and in my case one of the bolts sheared off in the axle casting so it will be a lot more hassle!

Those Brit parts bits are cheap compared to what ive ordered from dingocroft!

possible pin was worn but unlikely as you dont have a bush as 200tdi defender and previous ,but a bearing in a disco
 
Not meaning to go off topic but I suspect the reason mine has a pin that wears is the abs and yes the non abs has 2 swivel roller bearings but mine just one plus a Plain/bush bearing and a roller thrust bearing

for the sake of a few quid i'm going to replace the top pin and bearing and pack the ball with one shot grease and hope that cures the problem.
 
Just done the job on mine, 98 3.9 Disco 1, it had the "death wobble" so I have changed everything, ball joints, wheel bearings, steering damper, steering box overhaul and the fix was achieved by doing the swivel bearings and seals etc., I opted for the kit without the actual swivel balls as i am in the desert and corrosion is not a problem. The kit cost 38 quid from Craddock and had the bearings, seals, shims and 1 shot grease, I am not sure of the quality and how long they will last but i thought 38 quid was reasonable for both sides. Be prepared for a messy and long job, and be very careful that you put the seal retainer on the right way, like a numpty I put one on the wrong way round and when it came to secure the big oil seal it would'nt line up so I had to strip it all back down just to flip it over DOH !!!!
