Hi guys,

stripped front brakes ready for MOT, one slave cylinder leaking in front N/S so im gonna replace shoes and slave cylinder in each front brake.

I filled the O/S front swivel with EP90 as it was dry, also topped up diff as it seemed empty!!

Where do you think this leak is coming from-im no expert but if its leaking onto inside of my wheel then is it the hub seal?

This is the N/S leaking slightly from swivel seal by looks of it?!



Anyone gotta decent front axle overhaul procedure to hand - or a link....im now going searching for one.

Usually if the oil is inside the brake drum it's the hub seal, on the back of the brake plate it's the swivel seal. Those look like it's worth doing both as you'd normally take the hub off to change the swivel seal (there is another way.....)
You might need new balls, too.

Swivel I would say, even thou you have these leather swivel protection like I have .

I would be doing a complete strip down and change all the seals on the front of that motor. Looks a bit dodgy to put in for MOT like that. Buy Mintex brake linings and good cylinders, the kits to do the whole motor for £70 are ****e.

Hmm, i think my swivel seals need doing as they've gone like that with a leak (more like pretty thick oily sludge/ grease) through the leather gaiter. As its quite thick i would assume its the swivels leaking as they use grease?

I got Mintex shies, Lucas cylinders and nipples for £72 from paddocks.

Does anyone do decent seal kits for my style of hub assembly or am I at the mercy of a parts list and ordering everything individually?

Jack up one side at a time and check swivels for movement pull wheel from bottom and if movement get an assistant to operate the brakes if movement goes away issue is wheel bearings if the same then swivel wear or preload.

lol I know, someone's sprayed clear wax over everything...
nice and easy to undo bolts but a frikkin knightmare finding leak source!

samc88 The swivels should have EP90 oil in them. However most have now most likely got One Shot swivel lube in them. I find this works well to slow down the leaks on dodgy swivels but is messy when you strip down. It does not drain out like the oil.

p.s just spoke to Paddocks, ordered two swivel kits and two hub kits...croikey, better order a spring tension meter for my preloads.....venturing new territory..eek!

You might want to order some assorted shims for the top of the swivel to set the tension and you'll need some drive member gaskets. It's usually worth having a few spares of these and they're only pennies. Probably worth doing the hub oil seal at the same time - the older one is leather, cased in metal, and the newer one is rubber, but it's supposed to fit OK on the older hubs. And you might find the tab washers on the swivel don't survive removal....

Because they swim in a sea of oil most of the bolts come out OK. The swivel seal is held in by the retaining ring which also seems to be holding the gaiter on - this might need a bit of care on reassembly. It's actually quite a fun job, until you come to bleeding the brakes (see various threads...) I've never used a spring balance for setting the preload - just do it by feel, it's not too hard to judge 10lb.
