sorry more qs on my swivels.
got an axle from mate that was his late dads, its 10 spline and going to fit it onto my 110 as my axle/swivels need rebuild.
just taken hubs off and noticed hes put oil in swivel housings, ive only had grease in mine.
what is oil and should it be there?

I believe that originally they all had oil, then some clever sod decided grease would be better and most people agreed... I have allmakes one shot in and so does everyone I know.


someone correct me if I'm wrong :)
 
grease didnt come into use till the mid 90s ,either ep90 or one shot grease is perfectly fine on any age of defender

i did ask them when we was building new non current axles for them and they said it was purely to extend service interval and so make servicing a little quicker /cheaper
 
thats the reason they use one shot? Sound... local landy garage also said it helps if ya seals are starting to leak a bit, got the lovely job of replacing swivels and seals soon, been advised its a 4/5 hour job either side :(

depends how it goes a very good long 14mm spanner is useful ,yep i thought it was because it wouldnt leak as easy but that wasnt the reason just a lucky result

that sounds better :D chances of that are slim though! I expect every bloody one will either sheer or get rounded off knowing my luck :rolleyes:

gotta get the swivels out the old units that I picked up at newbury yet anyway so that'll be a bit of practise for me

I replaced my swivel pins and bearings and seals last week ... callipers came off easy with a breaker bar. As I wasn't replacing the swivel ball I left the 7 ball bolts in place but it took me about 6 hrs in total. I did replace both wheel bearings too while I was at it.

Not a bad job really but a bit messy :)
 
I've just mine in the garage for noo swivels, noo springs and shocks. Noo balljoints. noo bearings etc etc

O/S front dumb iron replaced.

3days it took.. :eek: Had to nick the front hubs off the disco as the CV's and half shafts. were completely mullered. took me 2hrs to get each one off.
 
I've got to do both dumbirons as both are rotten around the front jacking points but that's for another day! :rolleyes:
