Am about to follow another of Buster's guides and replace one swivel ball joint which is leaking.

52mm box spanner already ordered :)

Range of replacements available (part FRC7065)

Britpart OEM £45
Bearmach Replacement £48
Bearmach OEM £77
LR £112

Normally stay well clear of Britpart, but would their OEM one be an OK bet?

Intend also replacing the oil seals and joint washers while I'm at it. Anything else I should be replacing while I'm at it?

Cheers

britpart oem and genuine are as good as any obviously if yours is 300 tdi then frc7065 is right ball 1x ball seal ftc3401g ,2x swivel brgs 606666g timken dont undo bottom pin theres no need to and saves shearing them and causing more work 1x seal ftc3276 dosent come with ball 1 x ftc3179 washer wheel brg nut

Wonderful!

Aware the bolts holding the swivel ball oil seal can be tricky

Any other potential snags I should know about:)

I had to cut a few of the swivel house retaining bolts off to seperate the parts - therfore would recommend having a few spares just in case.

Good call - will do

Were you able to hammer them out or did you have drill them?

Were these the ones that hold the silver swivel bearing to the axle, or the ones that hold the housing to the axle stub?

top and bottom swivel bearings 606666g are £12 plus each the others are cheap **** swivel ball bolts need a good 14mm bihex spanner ,it helps if you put spanner on wrong way round to slacken bolts with hammer

Cheers james

What's your view on the actual swivel balls themselves?

Know you have a good handle on what is OK from Britpart and what isn't

I managed to cut the head off the bolts and then, once the swivel housing was off, I cut a slit into the rest of the bolt and used an impact driver to undo it.

Fitted Britpart kits to my 90 for 6-years ago and they have been fine, no leaks and no adjustment required.
In the past I have bought genuine ones and the chrome started pitting after 3-years.

Cheers Litch

Confusing old business this parts game - must confess I'm tempted to go Britpart OEM - price looks good:D

britpart oem is as good as you will get i wouldnt fit britpart ,bearmach etc pattern swivel brgs but britpart do themn genuine as well, dont get carried away with the ****part crap on here ,yes pattern britpart or bearmach stuff is **** and has been getting worse ,but they also supply oem ,oe geniune and branded parts, its a bit like slagging tesco off as you dont like there cheap beans ,well by the dearer ones then, britpart tend to be cheapest for oe or genuine parts thats why there so big

Thanks James

From the comments I've tended to steer clear of Britpart, unless I could satisfy myself they were merely the importer/supplier of something else

Aware from your other posts that not all Britpart stuff is bad - just a case of being sure before you buy I guess!

Thanks for the steer re the bearings - I'll go for Timken as used those before - albeit many years ago!!

remember the other side of ring spanner is usually less worn and has better grip for slackening swivel ball bolts

Will do James

Must confess that would never have occured to me - thanks as always

Looking forward to tackling this - I know straightforward, but for me a relatively big job

SH are you changing the cv joints whilst it is in bits? Very easy to do.

Had hoped not to, but will check condition while they're out. I don't have any clonks from the front so am hopeful!

Also ordered rear silencer box as that's gone, so not keen to spend more pennies this month unless I have to:D

Presume just looking for movement/play in the joints much the same as for a UJ?
