would they be the silly plastic ones that become brittle and break off or will that problem have been sorted out do you think ??

Most are plastic and sometimes they break off and enter the engine.

yes thats what happened on my last FL2 How big a job is it to have the manifold taken off and checked and cleaned out now and again

yhis is why i asked the question because theres a grey area as to weather you can run them without flaps or not

That's an interesting link, those flaps look like a ticking time bomb.

From that link it looked like they may have stopped using them at a time before your's was built - but it sounds like they are actuated by vacuum - so is there any vacuum pipe going to your manifold?
Sounds like everyone on that thread who had them removed was running fine. i know what I'd do as a first job having got an F2!

i replaced the inlet manifold on my 2007 vehicle because of this but i,m sure the mechanic told me at the time yjere was a different manifold you could get now but it would need work on the ecu

apparently the SD4 does not have swirl flaps and were deleted on the TD4 in 2010 folks
