I'll be doing both my D1 and D2 next year - not looking forward to it!!!
Best bet is to steam clean the underside first. You'll find a local HGV or coach company offers this service. That should remove the worst of the crap, plus most of the oily film that is bound to be there.
Then take a wire wheel to the chassis and remove all the loose rust and old crud that has gathered over the years. Get right into the corners and crevices. Investigate any weaknesses and holes and do any welding as required. Then paint the chassis with red oxide, then a couple of coats of chassis black on the outside. Inject waxoyl inside the chassis sections after the paint has been allowed to dry for a few days. That should keep it solid for a few years. Not sure if thats overkill, but thats what I'll be doing.
NB I'm not a fan of Hammerite - I've found it chips too easily, hence the red oxide and chassis black.

Pretty much the same for me as what artic fox said.
Except i used a pressure washer to clean mine.
I washed it, wire brushed the hell out of the chassis, welded where it needed it, washed it again, let it dry for a couple of days then it was 2 coats of red oxide primer followed by 3 coats of manor chassis paint.
Forgot to add....... Admittedly i did have the body off the chassis at the time which made life much easier

as im going trayback half the body is already off. might lift the front half off a bit to aid acess
