Hi Folks,

I will be putting my sump back on tomorrow but am a little confused with the RAVE description. Could someone please pass on some guidance??

What are cruciform seals? Are these the little black Ts highlighted in teh sketch above?

With regard to the 5mm bead of sealant required. Where exactly do they mean by the front cover joint? Is this the vertical face?

Then the last bit is the rear main bearing joint. Which part of the joint is this exactly?

Cheers in advance

Means put sealant on the block over the area of the rubber seals shown in black. And across the rear main cap. Between the cruciform seals. Use what you want, but Hylomar is best. Cruciform seals are the rear main seals.

Cheers. Will these cruciform seals be obvious when I clean teh face up tomorrow?

Also the sealant at the black shown areas, is it just a 5mm long line? So just a tiny bit required. I am hoping its obvious when I clean it up in the morning.

The gasket I removed had sealant all teh way around. I bet they are a nightmare to hold in place when trying to get the sump back in!

UP's write up has a bit about it with a different diagram which might make it clearer, I followed it OK anyway :) http://www.discovery2.co.uk/Oil_pump_bolt.html It's stating the obvious really but just take your time putting it back together, keep checking the gasket is sitting where it should be all the way round and that the sealant hasn't been knocked off as you man handle the sump back into place. I did mine a few months ago and so far not a single leak!

your just applying a little sealant over the 4 joints in the surface sump mates to 1 either side of rear main brg cap and 1 each side were front timing cover joins the block

Sorry people, I am still lost. All the pics and descriptions are for Diesel and mine is a V8 petrol. I get that I put sealant in the four positions marked on the sketch above. But then Im lost as to where else to put it. The illustration does not show anywhere else?? I will just have a look when under there and see if it becomes more obvious.

Sussed it. Made sense once I cleaned up the bottom of the block. Basically just four small lines of selant and two blobs on the bottom end of what I assume are teh criciform rubbers.
I applied sealant to all of the locations illustrated only, so hope I dont get any leaks!!

Cheers all
