Help from members PLEASE: currently stranded in Brittany after my '96 300tdi suddenly stopped on French motorway tonight. Had made a cool four hundred miles today, mostly motorways so nothing strenuous and never above 70 mph.
We were coasting about sixty mph and engine just cut out. Engine turns over and doesn't catch. I noticed from the hard shoulder that when I turned ion the ignition, the yellow light was missing, not illuminated.
I have had to hire a car and just now got back to our holiday centre a hundred and fifty miles away but I don't want the French mechanics tearing it apart - I really want to be able to point them in the right direction and ship in my own parts from the UK.
Am absolutely jiggered at the moment so any suggestions while I have wi-fi access WILL really be appreciated.
Background: high mileage engine; head gasket replaced in Spain last week and head skimmed; lost power towards end of week when lots of black smoke emerged and garage told me they'd cleaned out turbo and problem went away. Since then had done approaching one thousand miles on way home when it all went so wrong tonight.

is it edc if not no big problem unless stopping had overheating or tapping noises before

If the engines been worked on, it may be worth checking the electrical crimp connection to the fuel cut off valve on the side of the Bosh injection system. If this has been knocked, it may have been loosened & has now fallen off - this would explain the sudden loss of power.

The above happened to me after I had changed the fuel lift pump (& unwittingly knocked the cut-off crimp connection); was driving on a dual carriageway when the loosened crimp fell off & engine just stopped!

The exact thing has also happened to me, it looked connected and ok but after re crimping it the issue has gone.

Thanks all. When I get a lift back to the car I'll take up your suggestions. Other useful info on file - my only problem is getting internet time.
