Ok so my p38 has broke down on the m1 motorway tonight and from the sounds of it my engine is goosed, so my question is I know of a 4.6 going relatively cheap but mine is a 4.0 so will a 4.6 go in where a 4.0 was with no mods to be carried out.thanks for any info.

The engine will fit, the extra capacity was got through lengthening the stroke.

The gearboxes are different though I think. Different gearing to match the extra torque of the 4.6.

Other stuff might be too like the final drives. I'm not sure about that.

Yep the 4.0 had the 4HP22 and the 4.6 had the 4HP24...the boxes are a different length (HP24 is longer) and I am sure the mating parts are different too....
 
wont straight fit,well it will but needs mods been there and done it,crank sensor position fitment needs to be modified, also need to change flywheel,bellhousing, flexi plate,t/c,and a couple of other bits and bobs

The girlfriend was in it at the time says she just lost power then it died and saw abit of what she said was steam,when I got there there was a kind of burnt oily smell there was oil on the floor but then again it has got a weep coming from the front crank seal so that might not be significant also I checked the coolant level 3 days ago and it was fine but earlier it was empty, when tried to turn the engine it sounded strangley loose and free spinning with no compression, just like my ford tranny 2 years ago and that was cam belt snapped, so im guna expect a mahoosive bill
 
All 4.6s are cheap cause nobody wants them. Anyway they don't go cheep the go bang. :D:D:D
 
Thats what i had feared i have a really good mechanic ,at least if it is the HG I know once its done its not guna go again while iv got it,well hopefully.cheers
 
Ok so my mechanic been on my car and is 99% sure it needs an engine but wont defo know till he gets deeper in tomorrow, so supose I need to start looking for an engine mine is a 4.0 thore but will a gems fit in with no mods or is that more work, seems to be more diesels on ebay than petrol, how hard is it to convert to diesel, or is that just silly, seriously ****ed of now big style
 
If it's overheated in a major way you could be looking at slipped cylinder liners, maybe not straight away but the V8's are prone to this anyway & overheating wont help. It may be a short term fix to just get HG's done.
See what your mechanic finds but if your planning on keeping it may be worth investing in a top hat linered block.
If you have a thor then i'm pretty sure a gems will not go straight in (different electrics etc).

The thing about V8's is there cracking to drive but a crushing blow...when they blow :(
 
Ye tell me about it Martin, see what mi mechanic says tomoz, hes asked me to ring him at around 11am tomorrow and will have a better answer for me, whats the landy specialists called by the way I didnt know there was any around here, but thats good to know for future issues which will be many many more im sure.

Hi Chris,

The guy is Warren @ WGB autos, in sheffield just off london road. He's an expert with all things P38 - especially V8's (He drives a 4.0 SE). Very thorough & reasonable price. i'll PM you his number.
 
there is a firm in spalding lincolnshire that dose a diesel conversion kit for the petrol p38s

Thanks for that mick, I want to keep with the V8 if I can but just weighing up all possibilities to keep her on the road

md engineering is there name but at 6295+vat nobody in there right mine would go for it,
