I've tried to search this but doesn't add up. I've had alternator fault pop up every now and again but hasn't affected anything till today, heard a clicking in drivers door, message centre flicking between mileage n saying door open, eas playing up by not going up or down but lights working trying to go up or down.

1997 p38 DSE

bcem plug corrosion possibly- causes alternator fault clean with electrical switch cleaner-first have EKA,make sure it works and disconnect battery

Maybe the alternator fault was correct and now the resultant poorly charged battery is causing the notorious electrical gremlins that come with a P38 and a knackered battery.

carefully clean all of them, When I had my p38 it did all manner of weird things on damp mornings-cleaned the plugs and it all went away

Never ignore an alternator fault message. Low volts would be my guess.

I don't disagree, but the alt fault if it is charging correctly is caused by corroded plugs on several occasions

Nor am I disagreeing with you, however alternator's can charge with a duff diode in the diode pack causing very noisy output that the electronics do not like.
