Firstly Im new to this forum so hello to all, so I have bought my first Range Rover as a non runner, supposed to be a starter motor issue, but it isnt, I bumped it off and it started but was making a knocking noise. this didnt seem to increase in tempo at higher revs but soon a screeching sound started so I turned it off. The noise sounded to come from the top end and if you stood behind it near the exhausts it sounded fine, anyone any idea what it could be.

Sorry, its a 1997 2.5dt, I am in Skipton N Yorkshire, forgot to add after I turned it off I took the oil cap off and smoke came out. Cant say much more as I dont know anything.

Think that needs a listening to.....could be quite a few things..sods law i was working in skipton on monday!!
Someone local will be along at some point so dont panic:)

any knocking noises should change with engine speed if they are related to engine internals. the screeching sounds like a belt slipping?

look round the viscous fan mebbe its damaged, follow the belt round and pry the pulleys see if theres and serious movement!!!

Just had a thought, when I started it last night it was minus 5 so Ive had a look and there is no antifreeze in it. Would this cause the noises?

Sounds like something siezed, water pump if frozen or belt tensioner. Whip the belt off and give everything a good spin.

Can anyone tell me what injector knock is, some one today told me that could be what is wrong with my RR.

This link shows an omega which sounds exactly like my car
