Hi all, not needed to post for ages as my disco1 has been as good as gold. BUT...... just lately I have been noticing a very notchy/jerky feel while slowing to a stand still. It does feel like an oval disc, or a very very slow motion abs (no abs fitted). This can only be felt during the last few yards of travel, sorry for the description but it is hard to explain.... This happens in gear, with or without the clutch pressed and also still happens out of gear (coasting to a stop), my foot is not on the brake so it's not a brake fault, handbrake is adjusted correctly so it's not that dragging, thought it maybe the clutch dragging but as explained I have tried it out of gear and foot off the clutch, all lubes are correct. Prop joints checked and ruled out, in gear and out of gear, gearbox ruled out.. No play in any of the wheels, bearings ruled out...
My amateur thoughts are...... front or rear diff failing or transferbox failing...As I have never experienced either of these so not sure if my symptoms match my thoughts...Planning a trip to Europe in the summer for two weeks so need to figure out what this problem is. Thanks all in advance. Mark

undo one end of each prop and see if a joint is tight ,then remove each prop in turn and test run in diff lock

you've just described a symptom that matches how my 90 feels at low speed coming to a stop!

going to try your suggestion james. it sounds pretty logical, although i didn't think of it before :)

Sounds like uj joint. grab the prop and give it a wiggle then turn the wheels a bit forward or back and wiggle it some more. you will soon find play in one. easy repair if you follow bustersbus pics. (go to forum) Same happened to mine till it finally went altogether. driven at 40 it was ok so made it home from Morecambe. but as I slowed GOD the noise was horrid. Good luck mate.

Thanks for your replies, just to add to the info which I forgot to mention..... I replaced the rubber dohnut on the rear prop, together with the bush in the end of the prop two weeks ago because the previous rubber had shredded itself. The symptoms I described were there before the new rubber fitted and is still there now, doh. I will post when i have had chance to get underneath.

Thanks John for your reply, don't mean to sound thick but which joint is the uj. As explained I have changed the rubber donut, thinking this would be the cure as the old was was in bits. What am I looking for?

You've got a universal joint at each end of each prop shaft, held on to the flanges on the diffs and transfer boxes with 4 bolts. you need to know where they are so you can grease them regularly with a grease gun applied to the nipple on them. there's a grease nipple on each prop shaft too, which you should do every so often.

Go to forum and look up Busters photo landrover repair. It's excellent look up uj joint and he will show you photo's of a uj joint and how to repair them step by step photo's aswell. I did mine in an hour. fairly easy to do. Especially if you already done the donut.
grab each prop and give it a good shaking you will notice some play in one of them.
Good luck

It sounds like a UJ or the donut. When you replaced your last one did the propshaft slide freely? They can sieze up and this lack of movement can cause excess stress on the donut and give a vibration.

Also have you got any mods? Lifts, tyres e.t.c.?

I have no mods, my D1 is standard from top to bottom. When you say siezed, I did have to get a bar between the diff end flange and the end of the prop to force it back enough for the prop to drop free, (thought this to be normal). I also replaced the rubber/metal bush in the end of the prop. Refitted the prop and greased all nipples. However I didn't really see a right or wrong way to refit the donut. So I just refitted it with the 6 new bolts. I can't do as suggested earlier using diff locks cus the lever is siezed, not sure if it has ever been used. Thats for another thread, and another job on the list, lol.

Just looked at Busters pics, and now I know what a UJ is... thx. I have not really considered that there are bearings in that joint, just goes to show how much of a newbie I am. I will try and have a go at anything but I would really like to know what to fix before I start replacing everything..lol.

Go with jamesmartins idea of undoing the props at each end one by one and checking the joints to make sure they aren't seized :)

It sounds to me like the prop cant move and is putting pressure on the donut. Is it flat or has it got a slight kink to it? The prop need to slide in and out to compensate for the change in length when the suspension moves, if its siesed the the gearbox and the diff will be fighting over the prop and giving a vibration. When i upgraded to a 200 prop it was siezedas well, i had to force it out and then clean up all the splines, i actually used a small disc cutter to remove the lining from mine but its not recommended though as this can allow the two to rust together, i clean mine out often though as it goes through alot of mud and ****

Hi all, just a post to update the fact that one thing leads to another.. tried wobbling, pushing, pulling and tugging on both props to see if the bad joints jumps out at me, but alas not, all seems ok. So I wanted to drop a prop off, engage diff locks as per above replies and give it a test drive... The diff lock lever does not move at all to the left..(never has since I got the disco) I have read separate posts about using release fluid. I couldn't see where to spray underneath, so I stripped out the centre console and all the gaiters, knobs etc.. drilled out t e rivets to reveal the H/L diff lock lever workings.., I tried a crow bar, I have tried filling up the housing with release fluid and left it overnight, but still no movement at all....After giving up very pi==ed off. I put the interior back together and somehow must of caught or knocked the handbrake button because once the centre console was in place the handbrake button was stuck in gggggrrrrrr. Final status.......notchy feel to low speed , still there, Siezed diff lock lever, still there and finally stuck handbrake button was tapered down a little, handbrake works fine.. As time is an issue I will eventually get enough time to sort both problems, I think.

On the smaller issue of the hand break button mine did the same. Ended up getting a pair of pliers and pulling the knob off. Comes off easy enough. just left with the rod and got to push it with my finger. It hurts but until I can finish rest of the jobs. It's low on priority list. Sorry Can't be of help in your box problem. Diff Locks Last Stand (Rated PG) - YouTube check this out. not much help but you might see something that could help/
