When the wheels on the disco are straight ,the steering wheel isn't, sorry can't think of a better way of putting it, obviously the steering wheel should be straight with the wheels but it is pointing between 11 and 12 o clock, i was wondering what would cause this and is it something that can be rectified easily?

Also i get a funny squeaking noise when i turn the wheel ,its not all the time usually when cold, there's no stiffness to it ,it just squeaks, it sounds like its coming from just behind the steering wheel, could this be the Pas pump,i've checked the pas fluid and its topped up, Could it also just be in need of a change of fluid?

Cheers for any help you can throw my way, and maybe some abuse for asking stupid ****ing questions.

If somebody has changed anything on the steering, the wheel could be out of alignement. Probably good idea to get the tracking checked and if the wheel is still out, lever the horn button out, undo the nut, pull the wheel off & re-align it. Its on a spline. Don't know how to do it if you've got air bags though. Would be a bit cautious about messing around with that.
Is it a squeak or more of a groaning noise with the power steering?

If ye've got the air bag in it then ye might wantae try takin' off the steerin' shaft and settin' it from there.
Dunno if it's the same as the defender ones but this might give ye an idea...

My steering wheel was like that and it never felt right to me when going over minor bumps at speed. I took it to two Kwikcraps, one said Disco tracking was too complicated, the other said as mine was LHD the tracking was different and their eqipment was set up for RHD. Took it to me local Landy indie garage who replaced the track rod ends as they were siezed, used copper grease so they shouldn't do so again. Set the tracking for me (said it made no difference whether was lhd or rhd!) and things are much better. Cost me £84 all in so not too bad plus it drives better and me steering wheel's straight!

if yer wanna take yer steering wheel orf and its gort a airbag then you need to disconnect the battery , go fer a coffee and sticky bun (atleast 15mins) then come back and remove it. they usually have torx screws that yer need to remove from behind the wheel

Jack the front wheels up, to take the load off them straighten the wheels, apply the steering lock, twiddle the wheel until it locks.
This will tell you whether the problem is with the road wheels, easy to adjust, whatever K*** F** may say, or the steering wheel, see advice above.

now you mention it does sway more towards a groan more than a squeak.

It's an easy job (in theory) you need to adjust the ball joint on the end of the drag link. This is the bar that runs from the drop arm to the n/s front wheel.
Can't remember whether it has to go in or out but either way it won't need to be moved far only 2 or 3 turns

Both my Disco 300's make that noise. I vaguely remember something in a Landrover service bulletin about a sort of harmonic vibration which builds up in the power steering hoses. Sort of pressure wave which makes a groaning noise. I think you can find it somewhere in the RAVE manual. I don't think it's a problem other than being bloody irritating.

top man cheers for that, i'll keep an eye on it, its not all the time so not really a problem , just wanted to make sure the fookin thing weren't gonna drop off or whatnot.
