2009 freelander 2 steering rack
How much you reckon for a new one please
I am in New Zealand, so this is of limited help, but will give you an idea.
I bought a FL2 that failed WOF (MOT) on steering. Price reflected fail. I took it to a power steering specialist. That is all he does. He told me FL2 racks are perhaps the poorest quality on the market because the accountants interfered with engineering. It has a Teflon gasket that wears out, dumping bits in the filter, and then the O-ring perishes, after which the rack is stuffed. In short, it should be considered an expensive maintenance item, like air struts, not a failure, meaning they all wear out.
This is where the Teflon and O-ring end up.
His cost to remove rebuild and reinstall was NZ$1,100 (about £500) plus 15% gst (VAT). The labour was about $450, the rebuild $650. He said removal of the primary bolts took a 2 metre long breaker bar extension.
Doing a Google search on
rebuild power steering unit in UK it looks like you have plenty of choices. I would recommend rebuild over new if it is not far away and comes with a good warranty.
