Driving back last night from North Devon, my Landy developed a problem with the steering. Which I can only describe as it felt like it was 'self steering', and kind of 'weaving' down the road( and no, I hadn't had a drink:)). Also, cornering stability had gone completely - in that unless I went round the corner at almost crawling speed, I really felt as though I was going to lose control of it.


I stopped and checked my tyre pressures, and there are fine .

I don't have much experience with steering problems, so would appreciate any help/ advice you could offer.

yer tie rod ends probably stuffed. did it feel like it was rear or front wheel steering? get onto a dirt road with plenty humps n bumps and drive slowly. if it feels like its rear wheel steering aswell, [as you go over an uneven bump with the rear it will steer in the direction of the wheel that is highest]then yer rear susp bushes are stuffed too. i would have the whole lot replaced and then do wheel alignment. :p
 
You don't want that on the road till it's sorted ....

It may be perfectly simple, but get underneath and make sure that every suspension rod and arm is firmly attached to something at both ends, and has a decent looking bush in it.

Make sure the steering arm nut is tight to the steering box while you are looking. Lift the bonnet and check all the little UJs in the steering shaft.

Don't take chances with this - sort it now.

I had a similar proble, turned out to be the universal joint in the steering column. Put a new one on and it was like new, hope this helps
 
Turned out to be the rear axle bushings were completely shagged , and the front bushings weren't too clever too.

All changed and now she drives bloody ( opps. can I say that without getting banned) lovely.

Worth noting. I thought I had a lot of transmission slack when taking up the drive. With the new bushes it is no more.:D
 
What I would like to know is.

The steering and handling is good when unloaded. But as I use my Landy for work also , I carry daily 350 litres of water, and equipment in the back + ladders on the roof. So, approximately carrrying 500 Kg's.

Now this makes my Landy handle not so good:rolleyes:. Rear tyre pressures are set at 40PSi and fronts at 35PSi

She drives OK, as long as I take it steady. But if I take a corner a tad to fast then there's a fair bit of roll, and feeling things are near there limits.

What are my options to improve the handling with that much load?

I was considering a trailer for the water, but more the area, and properties I visit this is not the most practical solution.

Is it a case of uprating springs and shocks? But will I then lose unloaded stability?

I would appreciate your advice on this, Thanks :)

Fit HD springs to the rear. Also with that amount of water sloshing about it's bound to make cornering a tad exciting. Also LR recommend 28psi in the fronts for a fully load 110 and 48 for the rears, assuming your running 750R16

I'll up the rear pressures, and drop the fronts.

Are those loaded pressures the same for a 90?

I'll sort myself out some HD springs:)
