I've had my car a few weeks and have noticed a tendency for the steering to judder occasionally when a front wheel (either one) encounters a pothole or similar in the road. The wheel vibrates quite violently for about 5 secs and then returns to normal.

I'm thinking steering damper, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also.....

The car has 'wood' trim from dashboard right back accross the cubby box to the rear air vents, was this standard on an HSE

The Range Rovers do like everything to be spot on in the steering department. The damper is a good place to start. If you replace it, check the new one before fitting. Fully compress it and then pull it open a few times and make sure there are no "easy bits", its not unknown for these to be faulty from the off. Check all your ball joints for ANY play and replace where neccesary. Check your tyres for uneven wear and then finaly the tracking.
