Range Rover P38a 4.6 Vogue SE in Oslo Blue
This is one of the last 300 Range Rover P38a to roll off the production line and one of 92 in Oslo Blue. This one was registered on the 30/04/2002 making it one of the very last and has had 8 owners covered almost 114000 miles and Mot till 11/08/23.

I bought this in late 2021 as a project because to be honest it was in a bit of a state even though it had an Mot. My plan was to sort out the mechanicals first and then sort out the body. The mechanicals are mostly done and I had planned to do the body work this summer, unfortunately my health isn't good and it takes too much out of me each time I do anything so I have decided to sell.

I have replaced all the ball joints, the steering arm and drag link and replaced the steering damper it now doesn't wander all over the road.
It's had a new set of Avon Ax7 tyres with 8.5mm tread left and tracking done, it had already had new discs and pads. The five standard Comet alloys are in good condition also.
Replacement EAS pump fitted.
It has had new air filter, pollen filters and just about to do an engine oil and filter change. I also have the oils to do the diffs and transfer box.
It could also do with a gearbox oil and filter change but this needs either a ramp or a pit to do.

The engine seems to be pretty sound, I have been running it on Tesco Momentum fuel which it seems to prefer. It has standard rear silencers but no centre silencer(not sure it it would have had one) so it sounds good without being offensive. The engine also has an LPG system which didn't work when I got it. It has now had new injectors and diaphragms plus the LPG ecu has been reset. This now functions well and I use it on longer journeys when cruising on A roads or Motorways, certainly helps with the mpg, around town I use it on petrol.
The alternator has been refurbished with new brushes and bearings, it has also had a new deepcycle uprated battery.
Have also replaced some perished pipes and fitted up-rated earthing straps.
Inside it had had a new headlining fitted by the trader who sold it to me, that makes it look as it should.
The seats are cream leather with blue piping and blue carpet with original blue over mats. All the front seat electrics work as they should, even the heating. It has the original Radio and CD auto changer with Harmon Kardon speaker system.
The HEVAC unit and navigation all work as do the steering wheel controls.
It has a swan neck towbar with a 13 pin socket, it has towed my small trailer with ease.
It has two working remote keys and has been fitted with a second remote switch to stop the battery drain issue with the central locking picking up spurious signals.

The bits that need sorting.
Gearbox Oil and Filter change.
Most of the paintwork is OK for its age and it did have some professional polishing before I got it, however the roof is very rough and one of the door mirrors has pealing lacquer, it has some car park dings too and two rusty places at the bottom of the rear wheel arch one of which is covered with a temporary patch. The windscreen trim needs to be taken off and refitted. Also the sunroof doesn't respond to the button, pretty sure it has been disabled. Some of the plastics could do with changing where they have gone brittle over time but these are plentiful second hand
I think if someone put in the time and effort I had planned it would be a tidy example.
I am looking for offers in the region of £4k ono.

It's up on ebay too with others of similar vintage but they are not really moving, wonder if the running costs are just too high at the moment. Don't want to give it away but it has to go unfortunately. Will include any oils and filters I have waiting on the shelf and the USB interface cable for the LPG system which came from https://lpgautosupplies.co.uk/ formerly TinleyTech (Mick is a top bloke when it comes to LPG)

Running costs and complexity...the list of p38 fans is getting shorter by the day. It would be interesting to discover the average age of a P38 owner, but I suppose c.60, and the P38 is a tough choice for a retiree who cant/ wont get under the vehicle...My day will come, but not yet.

I’m 30, but I reckon your probably right with the average age, mate of mine bought on a little before me and he is 67 so that definitely fits your estimates.

@Andy Burrell quick question about your lpg, did yours only have the one vaporiser? I can see it on yours passenger side though your whole system is a lot more neater than mine anyway it’s only because I have two one to each bank.

Yep it has a single vaporiser but from memory with two pipes out through two filters. All new injectors on a custom made plate as before they were under the manifold and a right pain to access.

Yeah my injectors are on top though facing the standard way and looks like they been put to high in the past as there is a small dent in the bonnet where one of the injectors have obviously hit it from the underside.

I might look into getting mine changed to the single vaporiser as one there will be less mess with the coolant hoses, but I think now I’ve got it running on the gas the gas might be leaking back into the coolant system as I’m not losing coolant now I’ve found in theory all the leaks but got the lpg up and running at the same time and found that after 12 hours of sitting the coolant hoses are still quite hard and releasing the cap there is a lot of pressure buildup and the coolant rises to the right level as it’s obviously being pushed down under pressure. Took the lpg fuse out and running on petrol for today and if tomorrow the the hoses go back to being soft after sitting overnight that will confirm that it’s gas getting into the system so instead of servicing them as I think @kermit_rr did that recently it might be worth just having it swapped over to the single vaporiser anyway.

oh dear that doesnt sound great. i replaced the diaphragms and seals, thought they were OK but i guess it wont take much, they are rather old (to be polite).
you can get singles that are big enough to handle the volume.
the instructions said the lpg map is lost if you pull the fuse, but i'm not sure about that.. its worth checking

Lpg map is definitely not lost as obviously it had been out right up until I’d sorted the wiring and I can the see the name of the map “50mphlpgstart” or something like that it had on it and it seemed to run well on that map, maybe a very slight roughness at idle not even enough to misfire just slightly off and maybe slightly lacking power up very steep hills when going around 20-30 but again not much but apart from that it’s drove lovely on the map that was already on it as I haven’t touched the map. Apart from what I just said it doesn’t react any different than when it’s running on the petrol it pulls really well even when you absolutely floor it.

As for the diaphragm and seals will hopefully know by this time tomorrow as if the hoses coolant isn’t still pressurised then it’s definitely the gas getting in. Like I say if it that, I’ll just try and get into an lpg place and replace it with a single rather than another service, I’d rather not replace by myself as it means bending copper pipe and all that plus they will be able to make sure the map is going well as it would almost certainly need doing again if changed to a single.

Mine has an isolator switch in the cabin that disconnects power to the LPG ecu as it seemed to cause a bit of current drain when parked up for a week or two. The map is retained when the power is restored. Mine works better cruising along at 40+ mph, around town it needs a very gentle throttle otherwise it gets a bit woolly. I had planned to take it to Mick who took over TinleyTech to fine tune but other events overtook that so didn't manage to get to him.
The guys who are buying the car hopefully picking up at the end of the week, one less thing to worry about with everything else going on with me at the moment. Am both sad and happy at the same time.
