Before you all jump down my throat and tell me to do a search on this topic, I did.
All I could find was a guy asking what I'm about to ask and then him getting 5 pages of arguing about the difference between genuine and non genuine parts. From what I can conclude he never actually got his question answered.
Anyway, I've been looking to replace the steering damper on the P38 but wondered if anybody has any feedback on the difference in performance between the budget units at around £17.00 + vat and the genuine part at around £56.00 + vat with several at different prices in between.
I don't want to know the difference between genuine and non genuine and you get what you pay for. I will happily spend the money on the dearer unit if it warrants it or buy the cheaper unit if in this instance its going to give me the same life time and performance.
Could somebody shed some light on this one for me please,

The £17.00 one is a steering damper. The £56.00 one is a £17.00 steering damper with a Land rover stamp on it.
Another example 10" length of brake pipe with two tube nuts on. ANR4709 brake pipe L/H £36.24. ANR4710 brake pipe R/H £70.34. Same pipe same length just bent handed. A fiver would be dear. Where they get £36.24 and £70.34 from is totally unknown.

I would go for the happy medium, cheapest was a bright orange one (no names but you can guess) and i thought id try it and it started leaking within a week. Wasnt going to pay for the LR stamp so found a half decent one (good LR aftermarket brand) on the online market place for £30.
 
My ****part steering damper is okay - hasn't leaked yet but then it's only done about 5,000 miles. Fitting it noticeably reduced post bump vibration through the steering.

Mine too. Three years plus. Miles don't really tell the story, the roads I use are bad!
 
My P38 came with a brand new Britpart one, I am "satisfied" with it, actually it does what it is suppose to do, however I know that many P38 Fans in Japan love Blistein ones and they are apparently of a rare commodity in Japan due to that. The Garage where I go also praise them for their durability and comfort. I will have to try one day to see the difference but apparently you can tell in a sec the difference.
 
Bought an Armstrong unit in the end. The price was in the middle and as far as I'm aware they have been around for years so will see how we get on.

It's not how long they have been around it's where they are made these days that is the concern. Bit like most car parts really.

I remember Armstrong lever dampers - often went pop ten minutes after you fitted new ones! :eek: Britpart would be proud! :D
 
If any of you are thinking about changing your steering damper I strongly recommend you buy yourself one and change it. What a difference it makes, I'm presuming my previous one had been on there from new and was tired after nearly 95,000 miles of steering damping.
5 minute job to fit, instant result.

Fitted a bright orange ****part Cellular one, 5000 miles on it's F****D
No resistance at all in one direction. Lesson learned.
