Would the steering damper be not functioning all corroded like that? Does the outer casing just provide protection?

How do I tesy for play? Grab hold and try to move?

first one: yes, after all if you get a non genuine one it is not going to cost a fortune.

second one:  yes i would change that and check the bracket to chassis is strong that has had some corrosion going on for a while

third:if you are replacing the one on the other side, which is pic 2 i think then yes change them as a pair.

fourth: i wouldnt say so, but check for play with a pry bar.

I have just done the first three on mine, i dont have antiroll bars, all of them are easy enough jobs, get fresh bolts for the chassis end of the trailing arms, 16mm by 100mm i think and fresh nylock nuts, along with a couple of new 20mm nylock nuts for the chassis endn and 6 m8x30 plus nylock nuts for the bushes at chassis end makes the job much easier being able to just cut off the old bolts and replace.

the damper is just some 17mm nuts, whip it off and give it a squeeze.

change damper bushes aswell?

for what they cost, silly not to, these bits are not expensive, even here in Poland where stuff is 4 times the cost in the uk, all in that lot would be 30 quid maximum, i think Paddocks were doing the trailing arm bushes at £3.50 or something daft plus vat and postage.

I would recomend changing both your rear arms and bushes i had one snap on the road not recomended brown trouser moment, damper easy to change just done mine makes a big difference

damper looks wet but could be oil from engine looking at ya diff. For the price of it. I'd change all bushes for new polybush kit £ 80 If you have it to spare and have the time. Doing all mine this weekend if weather ok. Bought floflex polybush kit everything plus A frame ball joint cost £ 108. Hoping it will feel like a new drive after it. Always good to change the old stuff. Good luck with it.

Yes , I too would be looking for that oil leak very soon , if twas I . When was this MOT'd last ?
