Given that I'll get bu**er all for my Freelander with a blown head gasket I have decided to try out "Steel Seal" as a fix.

They have a money back guarantee if it doesn't work, so apart from the cost of a new filter and oil there's very little to lose and everything else to gain.

The guy who told me about it says he has spoken to other Freelander owners who have used it with great results - lasting three years so far.

Has anyone on this forum used it?

How good is it?

Wouldn't touch anything like that with a K series engine...

The water channels on K series (especially the 1.8) are very narrow. Yes, you get a money back guarantee but they won't pay for the cost of a new cylinder head once the water channels get blocked.

You say you need new oil and a new filter, nothing mentioned about the coolant? Does coolant appear fine?

Good at what? Fixing the leak, maybe.
Trashing the head completely, definitely.

Mike if it's only the head gasket that needs changing you could do it yourself with a new head gasket set, depending on the one you choose between £50 -£100, you already said it's had a new coolant pump, cambelt and other bits so probably would be ok.

The guys on here will help you through doing the work yourself, there a some good videos on youtube showing head gasket replacement on the freelander and other rover cars with k series engine, the haynes manual also shows how to replace the head gasket, it's quite straight forward even for someone doing one for the first time, it's well worth giving it ago.

the real question you should be asking - what's failed?

Has a liner dropped?

Has the head corroded from insufficient antifreeze?

has it overheated?




Just swapping the gasket without finding the root cause, could well end up with the exact same issue, but you've thrown cash down the drain.

K seal has kept mine going for 18 months now. I'm pretty amazed! Don't see the point in chucking money at it when I want to swap to a diesel lump. I just need time and a bit of cash. Bloody self employment!
