Apologies for reviving an old thread but it appeared in a search and the symptoms are very similar. While pottering along the M25 this morning a fair amount of mist/steam came out of the heater vents in my 200tdi 110. It didn't smell like smoke and might have been water vapour.
The inside of the windscreen also has an odd oily substance on it that looks like condensation but doesn't go away when wiped.
Turning the heating setting to cold seemed to stop the steam from coming out of the vents. Anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem might be?

Sounds like your heater matrix is leaking. I'd expect there to be a smell of anti-freeze though.
