Went to start the car a few days ago and it just clicked, couple of tries and it started. Everything as normal until this morning and click took about 10 attempts to get it started.

Its had a new(not refurb) starter and new battery about 16 months ago.

So this morning i checked and cleaned all connections between starter and battery and the earth point. Put everything back together and it started as usual:)
,,,, tried again and click:mad:

An ideas where to look now?

My previous freelander did this....... New ignition switch cured it....... Not the key bit itself but the switch behind the key hole....... If you know what I mean...

sounds like starter solenoid contacts are worn, mine was like that sometimes started other times it took a few attempts on the key
you can get the parts to recondition it easily on ebay or at a electrical parts suplyer

Our freelander did this. Starter motor solenoid contacts. Quite a common thing. Part are about £10 on eBay and can do it fairly quick and easy. I am sure there is a DIY on here somewhere

I'm sorry but if It was ignition switch it wouldn't click would it?? It still sounds more to me like starter motor contacts

Would a new starter not last more than 18 months.

This is the reason i replaced the starter and battery 16 months ago, now it has started again. I had the exact same symptoms aswell.
I bought one of the solenoid repair kits last time and it was still the same.Don't know if it makes any difference but it was very cold last time it started. By the time i replaced them it had warmed up.

You would hope so. Not all parts are perfect first time though. I am only speaking from my experiences so I could be wrong , but if the ignition switch was faulty then it wouldn't send a signal to the starter motor. So what is the clicking?
I think the clicking is the solenoid on the starter and it is not getting enough power from somewhere, whether it be a bad earth (had it before) or a bad feed or bad contacts. If you have cleaned the earth then that puts out my first theory of the new starter motor not being earthed right, like a cable comming loose.

Try getting Somone else to turn the ignition and see where the click is

in a way I hope I am wrong, after all every day is a school day

I have the old starter with the refurbished solenoid in the garage somewhere. I could swap them out and see if it works.

I'll try cleaning the ignition switch first, because removing the starter was a pain in the arse last time

Yes thats what i replaced on the original starter. It made no difference and still clicking as before, so i bought a brand new starter and battery.

I think it can vary. When my switch went I could sometimes hear the starter contact click and bought a replacement contact. Never got round to fitting it as the problem got worse, to the extent trying start took longer then nothing happened. My issue was the switch. I assume the resistance across the contact varied so sometimes it would be low enough to get the starter to click, but not low enough to put full force behind the contact click to get a good starter contact. When the engine is running measure the battery voltage and the fag lighter voltage. This is what I did. Fag lighter was lower with the engine running as other things powered though the ignition switch were pulling down the volts after the resistance on the ignition switch contact.

It could be either the starter contact or the ignition switch.

my bet is on the solenoid,
you can test it with someone helping turning the key while you tap the starter, if it is a worn solenoid/contacts the tapping will close the circuit and the starter will turn

I've checked the paper work and the new starter came with a 2 year guarantee, so if it is the starter it will be going straight back.

Like i said i am going to try the ignition switch first as it's easier

even new parts can break down it is all according who made it and was it a cheap one but with 2 years warranty I would thought it was not a cheep one

I've got the switch off and cleaned, letting it dry before i refit it.

My ignition doesn't have the white plastic clip or the pin like hippo's pics

You can also try putting power to the solenoid terminal directly.... Either bridge the terminals with a spanner or screwdriver briefly. Or carefully use a length of wire connected to live on the battery and just touch it on the starter exciter terminal.

If it starts every time you do this it is not the starter. If it doesn't start or click then it is the solenoid. And if it clicks but doesn't start it is the starter motor it's self
