Hi guys

I have an opportunity to pick up a '95 4.0SE for less than $1000. The car looks clean in and out with no obvious faults other than it wont run. It will start but stalls almost immediately. The guy selling it believes that it needs a new fuel pump. What do you guys think?

Hi jt. Sounds like the fuel pump is priming but then not pumping. Could be an electrical gremlin though. Would be worth hooking up to diagnostics before buying new parts. Even so, sounds like a good price for the car as you describe it. If you have a few dollars to spend on sorting it out, think you should go for it. Good luck. Let us know how you get on.

i would go for fuel pump/or fuel pump relay under bonnet just swith it around with another yellow one they burn out easily

I'd check out the spark as well to see if it's nice white and bright. My 4.2 would start but barely run when it had a bad coil.

Thaks for all the pointers. I took a run out to look it over. Swapped the relay as suggested but no joy. The rest of the car looked reasonable but it just wasnt talking to me - if you know what i mean. Definetly not worth the gamble given that you cant check if she overheats. I will continue my search but will hold out for a post 2000 model.

Under $1000? Probably worth more for the parts for that money.
