Hi

I bought a 1986 90 with the 2.5na diesel engine in it the weekend. When starting from cold it takes quite a while to fire up, is this normal ? Anything I cab do to improve it ?

My only previous experience with land rovers was a 200tdi disco which turned over really easy hot or cold.

Are you holding the key against the spring just before start, where the glow plug light appears, for 20-30 seconds inorl?
 
Wouldn't have thought he'd need to pre-warm this time of year...a service wont hurt.
 
I can't recall seeing a glowplug light coming on. I did look for it as I thought it would be the same as the 200tdi I used to use.
 
It doesn't matter if the light works or not, they never go out even if you hold it 3 hours let alone 30 seconds...the important bit is not to touch the throttle (its got a cold start mechanism and will flood if you do)..hold it 10 secs and try to start..then 20 secs if it doesnt...repeat this til you find how long it takes from cold...warm it'll start with no pre-warm.

If you got it at weekend, change all oils and filters...have a look at your glowplugs..check daisy chain wiring.
 
It should start nicely enough with 10 seconds glowing at this time of year. it'll sound like a bag of spanners without glowing! :)
 
Think I've sorted it.

The glow plug initiation works slightly different on the 2.5 na diesel 90 than it dud on the 200tdi disco.

Am I right in thinking that you have to turn the key as if you were starting the engine but bit as much ? A light with 2 vertical lines and a diagonal line between them comes on ?

Thanks for all the advice.

Today something different happened. I turned the ignition about a dozen times but the engine wouldn't turn over. I could here a click when turning the key but nothing else.

I suspect the starter motor, anyway to tell for sure or any way of repairing it ? Or is it a replacement job ?

I suspect you are correct..all that cranking may have shagged your starter. Off to the bay of plenty you go, do not pass wind.
 
Make sure your battery is OK first! also try getting someone to do the starter while you give the starter motor itself a good whack with a hammer. the spring loaded bushes might be stuck :)
