Have 97 R disco 2.5 TDi. Sometimes just will not start. Had new Bosch battery late Nov 2010, new alternator Feb 2011. Can run and start fine, the next time for no obvious reason - nothing! Turn key engine just about turns over, lots of "clicking" with the occasional bleep off the alarm thrown in. Go back an our or two later and it starts fine. Have had indicated to me that it could be selonoid on starter, any views? Cheers, Col

Lots of clicking sounds like battery is it reading 12v with engine NOT running?

Are the terminals on the battery clean and secure?

Is the earth strap from the battery secured both ends and in good order?

Had battery tested and is in good order, terminals are also clean, greased and secure. Don't know about earth strap, will be looking tomorrow. Ta. Have other good starter motor, so was thinking of changing to see if that could be the cure. Starter motor was suggested by 4x4 spares place as distinct possiblity, just trying to find out if this may be a common problem. Ta Col

deffo check your earth connections first,try a jump lead from battery negative onto engine near starter-if this improves situation-your earths are dodgey
